GRIFFINS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CHARLESTON, 41-38

The Seton Hill football team lost a heartbreaker to the University of Charleston this Saturday in a WVIAC contest. The Griffins were defeated by the Golden Eagles, 41-38 in front of 1125 fans.

The game was back and forth throughout. The Griffins opened the scoring on a 37 yard TD pass from Matt Dowdell to Derek Thompson. Charleston responded with a 45 yard TD reception by Rusty Taylor from DeRante Hunter to tie the score at 7. Antwarn Jones put the Griffins back on top with a 25 yard TD run. Ray Wilkins added the extra point to make it 14-7. Terrance Spencer tied it at 14 with a 30 yard TD reception from Hunter. Josh Culbertson scored from 2 yards out in the second quarter to put Charleston up 21-14 at the half. Wilkins cut the UC lead to 4 with 22 yard FG with 7:12 to play in the third and Thompson's second TD reception put the Griffins ahead 24-21 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter was all offense as both teams accounted for 34 points. Preston Higdon put UC back on top 27-24 on a 5 yard TD reception from Hunter. The Griffins regained the lead, 31-27, on Antwarn Jones' second rushing TD of the day (2 yards). UC responded when DeRante Hunter raced 21 yards around left end for a TD to put the Golden Eagles up 34-31. Sammy Tranks put the Griffins back on top, 38-34, 11 seconds later when he returned the kickoff 82 yards. Hunter put UC ahead for good with a 43 yard TD run. The Griffin defense forced a three and out after a UC interception and the Griffin offense drove to the UC 33 to try a game tying FG, but the field goal attempt was short and Charleston ran out the clock to preserve the win.

Matt Dowdell was 25-35 for 317 yards and 2 TDs, setting school records for passing yards and completions in a game. Antwarn Jones rushed for 85 yards and 2 TDs and Derek Thompson had 6 receptions for 91 yards and 2 TDs. Rob Ellis had 12 total tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Seton Hill will travel to Concord next weekend for a 1 PM kickoff.
