Seton Hill University Athletic Department Philosophy

The Seton Hill University Athletic Department believes that an established athletic program is well-organized and promotes high achievement within the University. We believe that this includes a commitment to success athletically and academically. We believe that graduating and preparing our student-athletes is our top priority and the athletic experience enhances the overall collegiate experience of student-athletes, the student body, faculty and staff. We recognize and accept our role in developing students who reflect Seton Hill University's mission as well as the athletic department's commitment to our core values. This includes a commitment towards equity in athletics, sportsmanship, embracing diversity and promoting ethical conduct relating to student-athletes, coaching staff, University staff and athletic administration.

In order to achieve our mission as an Athletic Department, our interactions with our student-athletes, University faculty and staff, community members and representatives of our athletic interests are guided by certain core values. While we trust these values are inherent in the character of our athletic department staff members and team members, we also appreciate that values must be continually emphasized or risk being trivialized.

We therefore present the following core values as basic to our function as educators:

Accountability

  • Seton Hill student-athletes are accountable for their actions by being disciplined and balanced in their handling of the academic, athletic and social demands associated with their collegiate experience.

Citizenship

  • Seton Hill student-athletes should be responsible and caring citizens within the Seton Hill community and the community-at-large. These characteristics are demonstrated by volunteerism and a commitment to service in concert with the values of Seton Hill University.

Commitment

  • Seton Hill student-athletes are fully committed to their sport and understand the energy and dedication needed to be contributing members of their teams. Seton Hill Student-Athletes are equally committed to success in the academic arena. This reflects the University's commitment to the NCAA Division II academic philosophy.

Integrity

  • Seton Hill student-athletes demonstrate their integrity by being honest and trustworthy in their actions both on and off the field of competition. The preparation of our student-athletes to become leaders, good citizens and contributors to the community is a commitment by the Athletic Department and mirrors both University and NCAA Division II philosophies.

Respect

  • Seton Hill student-athletes respect others. This includes respect for other viewpoints, promptness and openness to coaching and supporting diversity within the team and the University.

Sportsmanship

  • Seton Hill student-athletes practice the ideals of sportsmanship within the framework of a competitive environment.

Institutional Intent

  • As a member and representative of the NCAA, it is the intention of Seton Hill to specifically follow the governing rules, regulations and principles of the NCAA. As an integral part of our mission, particular attention will be paid to the principles of the NCAA concerning conduct, control and well-being of the student-athlete as detailed in the Division II Manual.
