Seton Hill hit the road for a PSAC West matchup at Clarion on Saturday afternoon.
Clarion outscored the Griffins 16-10 in the second half as they defeated the Griffins by the score of 23-17. SHU falls to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the west while Clarion improves to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the west.
The teams combined for four punts on each of their first two possessions of the contest. Clarion took a 7-0 lead with 2:57 left in the first quarter on a 15 yard touchdown pass.
In the second quarter, the Griffins marched 83 yards in 15 plays to tie the score at seven.
Boden St Marie scored from two yards out to tie the contest. The teams headed to the halftime break tied at seven.
Early in the third quarter, the Griffins took advantage of a
D'Kairi Boone fumble recovery on a punt return to take the lead in the contest.
Rayyan Bataineh connected on a 42 yard field goal to put the Griffins in front 10-7 with 9:58 left in the quarter. Late in the third quarter, Clarion tied the contest at 10 on a 37 yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the third.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles used an 81 yard touchdown pass to take a 17-10 lead with 12:51 to play in the contest. Clarion then used a blocked field goal to set up a 20 yard field goal of their own that extended the lead to 20-10 with 9:24 to play. A Griffin interception set up another Clarion field goal, this one from 37 yards out with 6:21 left in the quarter. The Griffins got a late score on a one yard run from
Darrian Carter with 33 seconds left to play. The onside kick failed and Clarion was able to run out the clock.
Jayden Llanos led SHU with eight receptions for 117 yards. Both Carter and St Marie each had rushing touchdowns.
Thomas Johnson led SHU with nine tackles.
The Griffins will host Edinboro next Saturday afternoon in PSAC West play on Senior Day.
