Griffins Earn Huge PSAC West Road Win at Edinboro

Seton Hill headed north to Edinboro to take on the Fighting Scots on Wednesday afternoon looking to continue to hold on to sixth place in the PSAC West.  The Griffins were able to use a solid all around effort with four players in double figures for an 83-74 win.  It's the first win in program history against Edinboro.  SHU improves to 14-10 overall and 10-8 in PSAC action while the Scots drop to 18-5 overall and 14-3 in PSAC action.

SHU continues its grasp on the sixth and final playoff spot.  The Griffins are now just a half a game behind Clarion and lead seventh place Gannon by three games with four games remaining.

The Griffins got off to a quick start against the Scots.  Alexandra Hay got the Griffins on the board first by draining a three pointer.  A jumper from Mariah Wells and back to back layins from Chrisanna Green extended the Griffins lead to 9-2 just two minutes into the contest.  Wells hit a three pointer to give the Griffins a ten point lead at 16-6 with 4:38 to play in the quarter.  Alexandria Deep pushed the lead to 18-8 with a basket with just over three minutes to play in the quarter.  SHU would go scoreless the rest of the quarter and carried an 18-13 lead into the second quarter.

The Scots scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 21-18 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the half.  SHU went over six minutes between points before Jenna Kaufman scored with 6:28 to play in the quarter. With Edinboro leading 25-23, SHU went on an 8-0 run over two and a half minutes to take a 31-25 lead with 1:30 left.  SHU was able to push their lead back to seven, 36-29, at the half after an old fashioned three point play from Green.

Seton Hill had no problem breaking the Edinboro full court press in the early part of the second half.  The Griffins opened the second half on a 15-7 run to take a 51-36 lead with 6:22 to play in the quarter, forcing a Scots timeout.  Kaufman opened the scoring with a three pointer and a bucket.  Wells then followed with back to back three pointers.  The Griffins then got two fast break layups beating the press from Kaufman and Green to push the lead to 51-36.  Edinboro got to within eleven at 54-43 with 3:01 to play.  SHU responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:10 to increase their lead to 64-43.  Kaufman and Green converted old fashioned three point plays during the run.

Over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, the Scots went on a 13-2 run to trim the Griffins lead to 68-59 early in the fourth quarter.  Lindsey Mifsud connected on a three pointer to end the Scots run and extend the lead back to 71-59 with 6:23 to go.  Kaufman followed with a basket to push the lead to 73-59.  The Scots got to within six at 75-69 with 2:43 to play but would get no closer.

The Griffins shot 52% from the floor and 38% from three point land while holding the Scots to just 37% from the floor and 13% from outside the arch.  SHU also outrebounded the Scots by ten.

Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with a game high 20 points.  She also added 8 rebounds.  Chrisanna Green posted another double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Mariah Wells had a solid overall game with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block.  Alexandra Hay also reached double figures with 12 points.

SHU returns to the court on Saturday as they host #4 California (PA) for Senior Day.  Tip is set for 1 PM with the seniors to be honored at 12:45 PM.
