Griffins Can't Overcome Large Halftime Deficit

The Griffins hosted Gannon on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC West contest in the McKenna Center.  SHU outscored the Knights by eight points in the second half but it was not enough to make up for an 18 point halftime deficit as the Knights defeated the Griffins by an 81-71 score.  SHU drops to 13-10 overall and 9-8 in PSAC play while the Knights improve to 7-16 overall and 7-10 in PSAC action.  SHU currently sits in the sixth and final playoff spot in the west.  SHU is two games ahead of seventh place Gannon.

The first quarter was dominated by three point shooting as the Knights hit four to three for the Griffins.  Alexandra Hay hit the first three of the game with the Knights answering right back.  Chrisanna Green followed with a layup before Gannon took a 6-5 lead with a three.  Hay hit her second three to tie the score at eight with 5:12 left in the first half.  Gannon built their lead to 15-11 before Jenna Kaufman hit a jumper and Green hit one of two free throws to trim the lead to 15-14 with 2:24 to go in the quarter.  The Knights scored the final five points of the quarter for a 20-14 advantage.

Hannah Laslo scored the opening basket of the quarter and after a layin from Sydney Rabold, SHU trailed 23-18 early in the second quarter.  A layup from Mariah Wells and a three from Lindsey Mifsud got the Griffins to within two at 25-23 with 6:19 to play in the half.  SHU would only get baskets from Hay and Green the rest of the half as the Knights outscored the Griffins 20-4 to end the second quarter.

SHU used a layin from Kaufman and a three from Mifsud to cut the lead to 45-32 with 8:24 to play in the third quarter.  SHU got to within 12 points after a Hay trifecta with 6:58 to play in the quarter.  The Knights would build their lead to as many as twenty points in the quarter and settled for a 57-40 advantage after three quarters of play.

The Griffins made a run to open the fourth quarter.  Kinross Obiefule hit a jumper to open the scoring.  SHU then used three three pointers from Lexi Civittolo, Hay and Kaufman to cut the Knights lead to 59-51 with 7:33 to play in the fourth.  Gannon built their lead back up to 11 points before SHU used three free throws and a layup from Obiefule to trim the lead to 63-57 with 5:22 to go.  Gannon then rattled off the next six points to take control of the game and the Griffins would get no closer than 9 points the rest of the half.

Gannon was able to shoot 54% from the floor and 48% from three while holding the Griffins to just 45% from the floor and 41% from three point land.  SHU was able to force 13 Gannon turnovers and converted them into 20 points while just committing 7 turnovers of their own.  The big advantage for Gannon was in rebounding as they outrebounded the Griffins 36-20.

Alexandra Hay led three Griffins in double figures with 14 points.  Both Jenna Kaufman and Kinross Obiefule each added 12 points.  Chrisanna Green finished with 8 points.  Lexi Civittolo added 7 points off the bench.  Lindsey Mifsud and Alexandria Deep each finished with 6 points.

SHU looks to get back in the win column as they head to Edinboro for a PSAC West contest on Wednesday evening.
