Seton Hill continued its run against the top teams in the PSAC West as they traveled to Mercyhurst on Wednesday evening. The Griffins used a career high from
Alexandra Hay as they defeated the Lakers by the score of 70-64. The win clinches a PSAC playoff spot for the Griffins for the fourth straight season. SHU improves to 15-11 overall and 11-9 in PSAC play while the Lakers drop to 19-6 overall and 14-5 in PSAC play.
The Griffins can either be the fifth or sixth seed out of the west. SHU is a half game behind fifth place Clarion. The Golden Eagles are 11-8 with Cal, IUP and Edinboro to play.
After the Lakers hit two free throws to take the first lead of the game,
Alexandra Hay hit a three to put SHU in front 3-2.
Jenna Kaufman answered a Hurst basket to give SHU a 5-4 lead with 7:16 to play in the quarter. Over the next two minutes, the Lakers went on a 10-0 run to take a 14-5 lead with 5:22 to play.
Lindsey Mifsud ended the Laker run and started a 10-0 run for the Griffins to close the quarter.
Alexandria Deep scored five points in the run including a layin at the buzzer to give SHU the 15-14 lead after one quarter of action.
The second quarter was low scoring as the Lakers outscored the Griffins by an 11-9 margin.
Halie Torris drilled a three pointer to open the scoring for the Griffins just three seconds into the quarter. The Lakers scored seven straight as SHU went over four minutes between baskets as Kaufman hit a three with 5:43 to play to tie the score at 21. Hay followed with a three pointer but the Lakers used a SHU turnover with five seconds left to get an uncontested layup at the buzzer to take a 25-24 halftime lead over the Griffins.
Seton Hill came out of the locker room and put up 28 points in the third quarter to take control of the contest. The Lakers took a 31-29 lead with 7:30 to play in the quarter. Over the next two minutes the Griffins went on an 8-0 run to take a 37-31 lead. The Lakers hit a layup to cut the lead to 37-33 before the Griffins went on another run, this one a 13-0 run to increase the lead to 50-33 with 1:48 to play in the quarter. Hurst closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the Griffins lead to 52-39.
The Griffins only scored two points over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter as the Lakers cut the Griffins lead to 54-45 with 5:52 to play. From that point on Hay began to take control of the game. She hit a three to increase the lead to 57-45 and then drilled another three pointer to push the lead to 61-52 with 3:18 to play. The Lakers got to within 62-58 with 58 seconds to play before Kaufman hit two free throws to push the lead back to 64-58. The Lakers answered with a three before Hay hit two free throws and then got a steal and hit two more free throws to put the game away for the Griffins.
Alexandra Hay led the Griffins with a career high 20 points. She also added 6 steals and 4 rebounds.
Jenna Kaufman finished with 15 points and 7 assists.
Lindsey Mifsud also reached double figures with 10 points.
Alexandria Deep added 9 points off the bench and
Chrisanna Green finished with 7 points and 12 rebounds.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday when they travel to Indiana (PA).
