The Griffins returned to PSAC West action on Saturday as they traveled to Johnstown, PA to take on Pitt Johnstown. SHU used a strong second quarter in route to a 78-66 road win. SHU improves to 11-8 overall and 7-6 in PSAC action.
The game was tight early with neither team holding more than a two point lead before the first media timeout. UPJ held a 9-7 advantage at the first media timeout. The Mountain Cats relied on free throws as they scored their final six points of the quarter from the line. The Griffins closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 19-17 lead.
Jenna Kaufman drained a three and
Kinross Obiefule hit a jumper at the buzzer for the final points of the quarter.
Seton Hill came out of the gates on fire in the second half, outscoring the Mountain Cats 15-7 over the first five minutes of the half to take a 34-24 lead. SHU was able to extend the lead to eleven at the half, the last bucket coming on a three pointer from
Mariah Wells. SHU led 41-30 at the half.
Chrisanna Green led SHU with 8 points at the half. Wells and
Halie Torris each added 7 points.
The teams exchanged buckets over the early part of the half with the Griffins holding a lead right around 10 points. SHU extended their lead to 52-39 on a three pointer from Wells at the 3:25 mark. SHU held an eleven point advantage at the end of third quarter with the score of 56-45.
A quick basket from Kaufman and a free throw from
Alexandria Deep along with a three from
Lindsey Mifsud pushed the Griffins lead to 62-47 with 7:30 left in the game. UPJ cut the lead to 62-53 before the Griffins went on a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 69-53. The Griffins hit three of three free throws to ice the game down the stretch.
Mariah Wells led SHU with 16 points.
Jenna Kaufman added 15 points as part of four Griffins who scored in double figures.
Halie Torris tossed in 11 pts and
Chrisanna Green finished with 10.
SHU returns to action on Wednesday evening when they host Indiana (PA) at 5:30 PM.
