Seton Hill made the short trip to California to take on the #8 Vulcans in a PSAC West contest on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins played the Vulcans tough for two quarters but a strong third quarter carried the Vulcans to a 83-68 win. SHU falls to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in PSAC play.
The Griffins got off to a quick start with two baskets from
Chrisanna Green and
Jenna Kaufman to take an early 4-0 lead. The Vulcans then ran off the next ten points. SHU responded with a bucket from
Lindsey Mifsud and a free throw from Green to cut the lead to 10-7 at the first quarter media timeout. California was able to extend their lead to 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Two jumpers from Kaufman and a three pointer from
Alexandra Hay tied the score at 16 early in the second half. Green's layin tied the score at 21 with 6:45 left in the half. Cal built their lead to 28-21 but the Griffins got baskets from Kaufan and
Hannah Laslo to trim the lead to 28-25 with 3:55 left in the half. Six straight points from
Alexandria Deep to end the half cut the Vulcans lead to 33-31 at the halftime break.
California opened the second half on an 8-0 run over the first 2:37 forcing the Griffins to take a timeout. The Vulcans extended their lead to 45-31 before Deep hit a free throw at the 5:25 mark of the quarter for the Griffins first point. She followed that with a three and SHU trailed 45-35 at the third quarter media timeout. Cal outscored the Griffins 13-8 over the final 4:19 to take a 58-43 lead after three quarters of action.
Kaufman opened the quarter with back to back buckets but the Vulcans connected on two threes to extend the lead to 66-47 with 6:41 remaining.
Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with 20 points.
Alexandria Deep also hit double figures with 14 points.
Alexandra Hay added 13 points.
