Griffins Drop PSAC West Battle to Mercyhurst

Seton Hill returned home looking to extend its PSAC West winning streak to three games on Wednesday evening when they hosted Mercyhurst.  The Lakers jumped out to a 12 point halftime lead and ended the Griffins win streak with a 73-59 loss.  SHU falls to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in PSAC play.  The Lakers improve to 14-2 overall and 9-1 in PSAC action.

The Griffins got off to a quick start thanks to the three ball.  The Griffins used two three pointers from Mariah Wells and one from Alexandra Hay to take a 9-5 lead just under five minutes into the first period.  A free throw from Wells and a layup from Jenna Kaufman gave SHU a 12-11 lead with 2:54 to play in the quarter.  The Lakers outscored the Griffins 9-2 the rest of the quarter to take a 20-14 lead after the first quarter.

The Lakers scored the first seven points of the second quarter to build their lead to thirteen points at 27-14 three minutes into the quarter.  Mercyhurst would build their lead to as many as 16 in the quarter with the Griffins getting no closer than 10 points.  The Lakers took a 39-27 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter was all Mercyhurst as they outscored the Griffins 18-7.  SHU hit just three of fifteen shots in the quarter as the Lakers built their lead to as many as 28 points in the quarter and settled for a 57-34 lead after the third quarter.

Maggie McLoughlin hit two three pointers to open the fourth quarter for the Griffins as they cut the lead to 62-40 early in the quarter.  SHU hit three three pointers over the final three minutes to cut into the Laker lead.  Kaufman hit two of the threes and Alexandria Deep added the other.

Mercyhurst shot 51% from the floor while holding the Griffins to just 35%.  The Griffins were able to force 18 Laker turnovers in the contest.

Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with 13 points.  Maggie McLoughlin also reached double figures with 10 points.  Mariah Wells added 9 points.  Chrisanna Green finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds.  Hannah Laslo added 7 points off the bench.

The Griffins return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on #8 California (PA).  Tip is set for 3 PM.
