Seton Hill hosted Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon in the PSAC West opener for both teams. The Griffins outscored the Rock in the first quarter but were outscored in each of the final three quarters in a 72-59 loss. SHU drops to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in PSAC action while Slippery Rock improves to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in PSAC play.
Slippery Rock came out of the gates fast and led 7-3 just two minutes into the contest. SHU then ran off eight straight points to take an 11-7 lead with 4:50 left in the quarter.
Mariah Wells scored six of the eight points during the run. Five straight points from
Lindsey Mifsud and a basket from
Jenna Kaufman gave SHU an 18-12 lead with 1:45 left in the quarter. SHU took an 18-14 lead into the second quarter.
Halie Torris opened the scoring in the second quarter with a three pointer to extend the SHU lead to 21-14. The Griffins would then go five minutes without a point as Slippery Rock went on a 12-0 run to take a 26-21 lead with 5:22 to play in the half.
Alexandra Hay hit a three late in the quarter and Kaufman drained a three just before the halftime buzzer to cut the Rock lead to 34-31.
Back to back baskets from Kaufman and
Chrisanna Green gave SHU a 35-34 lead early in the third quarter. After another Hay three pointer, Torris gave SHU its final lead of the game at 40-38 with just over five minutes left in the quarter. The Rock then scored twelve of the last fourteen points of the quarter to take a 50-42 advantage into the fourth quarter.
After the Rock scored the first basket of the fourth to take a ten point lead, the Griffins responded with a 9-0 run to trim the Rock lead to one at 52-51. Back to back baskets, including a three by Hay opened the run. Baskets from Green and Kaufman cut the lead to 52-51 with 5:49 to play. SRU scored twice to push the lead to 56-51 before Green scored to cut the lead to 56-53 with 3:35 to go. That was as close as SHU would get as the Rock went 9-10 from the free throw line to ice the game.
Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with a game high 18 points.
Mariah Wells added 12 points and
Alexandra Hay also reached double figures with 11 points. Hay also added 6 assists.
Chrisanna Green finished with a game high 16 rebounds. Its her third straight game with at least 16 rebounds.
The Griffins return to PSAC West action on Tuesday night when they host Edinboro at 5:30 PM.
