Griffins End Virginia State's 8 Game Winning Streak

Seton Hill took a break from PSAC play with a road trip to Ettrick, VA where they took on CIAA foe Virginia State.  VSU entered the contest with an eight game winning streak but the Griffins were able to end the streak with a 59-47 win.  SHU now has a three game winning streak of their own following the win.  The Griffins are now 7-3 on the season while VSU falls to 8-2 overall.

The Griffins took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a three pointer from Jenna Kaufman and back to back layups from Chrisanna Green.  After a VSU basket, Mariah Wells drilled a three to give SHU a 10-2 advantage with 6:46 left in the opening quarter.  Back to back three's from Kaufman and Wells extended the SHU lead to 16-5 late in the first half.  SHU took a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.

VSU cut the Griffins lead to 18-14 just over three minutes into the quarter.  After a Wells three and a jumper from Halie Torris the Griffins pushed the lead back to 9 at 26-17 with 3:20 left in the half.  A three from Alexandria Deep and a basket from Torris gave SHU a 31-17 halftime lead.

Virginia State got to within seven midway thru the third quarter but an old fashioned three point play from Kaufman pushed the lead back to ten at 35-25.  The Griffins were able to extend their lead to 45-31 at the end of the third quarter.

A basket from Lindsey Mifsud to open the fourth quarter gave SHU their largest lead of the game at 47-31.  VSU battled back and cut the Griffins lead to 49-42 with 4:39 to play.  A layup from Green and a three from Wells extended the lead to 54-42 with just over three minutes to play.  VSU trimmed the lead to 11 but got no closer as SHU won their third in a row.

Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with 17 points.  Mariah Wells finished the game with 14 points.  Chrisanna Green and Halie Torris each added 9 points.  Green finished with a game high 18 rebounds.  The 18 rebounds are the most since Katie Gattuso pulled down 18 twice during the 2013-14 season.  Gattuso has the SHU NCAA record with 21 during the 2012-13 season.  Alexandra Hay finished with 7 assists.

SHU will close out their pre Christmas schedule with their Kids Game on Monday afternoon as they host Salem International at 12 noon.
