Two Griffin wrestlers,
Patrick Owens and
Ty Lydic, both earned spots in the NCAA Division II National Tournament at Saturday's 2015 Super Region I Wrestling Tournament at West Liberty (WV) University. Lydic finished third at 149 pounds while Owens won the true fourth place match at 141 pounds.
Lydic opened day two with a 4-1 loss to #2 seed Jeremy Landowski of Mercyhurst in the semifinals. Ty responded with two straight victories to earn the trip to St Louis. Lydic defeated Jackson Stabile 6-3 in the consolation semifinal and then defeated Andrew Banister of Notre Dame (OH) by the score of 4-2 in the third place match. Owens dropped his semifinal match to #1 seed Maurice Miller (Notre Dame-OH) by the score of 7-3 to open the day. He responded with a 10-4 win over Kody Young (Mercyhurst) in the consolation semifinal. Pat then lost by a 10-2 score to #2 seed Sam Hanau (UPJ) in the third place match. He punched his ticket to nationals with a 10-3 victory over Dalton George (Ohio Valley) in the true fourth place match.
Zach Voytek and
Ryan Walters both won their consolation quarterfinal match to open day two. Voytek won his match by fall (6:59) and Walters picked up a 3-2 decision victory. Both then dropped their next two matches to be eliminated from the tournament.
Mike Soria,
Brett Smith,
Christian Bosco and
Morris Lawson all lost their first match of the day in the consolation quarterfinals to be eliminated from the tournament.
This year's National tournament will be held in St. Louis, MO on March 13-14.
