The Griffin wrestling team took part in the 72nd PSAC Wrestling Championships hosted by Bloomsburg University on Saturday afternoon. SHU improved one spot from last season by finishing in tenth place with a team score of 18.5 points. The Griffins were led by
Mike Soria's fifth place finish at 125 pounds and
Zach Voytek's sixth place finish at 157 pounds.
Soria dropped his first round match by a 9-4 before picking up 10-4 and 16-3 victories to advance to the consolation round finals. Soria dropped that match by a score of 10-4 before earning fifth place with a 6-3 win over Seth Carr of Clarion in the fifth place match. Voytek earned a 12-10 win to advacne to the semifinals before dropping a 14-1 decision to top seed Kacey Davis of Edinboro. Zach then lost his next match before forfeiting the fifth place match for a sixth place finish.
Brett Smith went 2-2 at 174 pounds. He won his first match 15-4 before dropping a 5-3 decision. He advanced in the consolation rounds with a 16-1 win before being eliminated by a 4-1 score.
Ryan Walters was 1-2 at 165 pounds. He lost his first match 5-3 before advancing in the consolation round with a 10-3 win. He was eliminated by a 5-2 score.
Tanner Druck (149),
Morris Lawson (197) and
Max Gladstone (285) all went 0-2 in the championships.
The team will take a week off for finals before returning to the mats when they host Mercyhurst on December 18th at 7 PM.
