The Griffin wrestling team took part in the Washington & Jefferson College Invitational on Saturday and put in a very impressive overall performance. The Griffins had 10 wrestlers finish in the top 6 to take home the invitational title. Leading the way was
Mike Soria who took first in the 125 pound weight class.
Soria won all three of his matches. He won 9-6 in the quarters and 7-2 in the semifinals. He then defeated Austin Camacci of Millersville 6-2 in the final to win the 125 pound weight class.
Collin Dees finished sixth in the same class. He won his first match before dropping his next three.
Rodney Sunday was also sixth in the 133 pound weight class. Sunday opened with a 20-4 tech fall win, he then fell into the consolation rounds with a 2-1 loss.
Patrick Owens was third in the 141 pound class. He opened with a 4-3 win and followed that with a 6-0 win in the quarters. Owens was defeated 3-2 in the semifinals. He battled back with two wins in the consolation round and defeated Nick Sutton of Thiel 4-1 in the third place match.
Tanner Druck came in second in the 149 pound weight class. Druck opened with a 15-2 major decision win. He followed that with a 9-2 win and got a forfeit into the finals. He was defeated by Damon Cheek of Heidelberg 3-2 in the finals.
Zach Voytek opened with a pinfall in his first match on his way to a third place finish. He then won 8-7 in the quarters before falling 10-6 in the semifinals. Voytek then earned third place with a 4-0 win over Sean Byham of Thiel.
Ryan Walters led a string of Griffin wrestlers with fifth place finishes. He was fifth at 165 pounds. Walters won his first match 6-3. He fell into the consolation round with a 1-0 loss. Walters made his way thru the consolation rounds and won the fifth place match 14-6.
Dalton Rosta was another fifth place finisher. He opened with a 17-0 tech fall win. He then lost 6-0 before running off 4 wins in the consolation rounds. He then won the fifth place match 8-3.
Morris Lawson fought back after dropping his first match to finish 5th at 197 pounds. Lawson won three matches for a fifth place finish.
Alex Soutiere ended the string of fifth place finishers at 285 pounds. Soutiere finished with 4 pinfalls including one in the fifth place match.
Seton Hill will start its dual match season with a home matchup with Washington & Jefferson on Thursday evening.
