The Griffin wrestling team opened its season at the Clarion Open on Sunday afternoon at Clarion. Ten wrestlers took part in the event for the Griffins.
Joseph Alessandro,
Ryan Walters and
Dalton Rosta each won three matches during the event.
Colin Dees went 2-2 on the day at 125 pounds. He won his first match 3-2 before losing by fall in the second round. He won his first consolation match before being eliminated by fall.
Rodney Sunday won his first two matches at 133 pounds, winning 14-1 and then winning by fall (6:45). Sunday was then defeated by the 133 pound champion Scott DelVecchio of Rutgers, 13-2. Rodney then lost his first consolation match 5-2.
Joseph Alessandro went 3-2 on the day at 141 pounds. Alessandro won his first match by fall (3:56) and then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 12-5 win. He was defeated in the semifinals by a 11-6 score. Alessandro won his first consolation match 5-1 before being eliminated with a 6-4 loss.
Tanner Druck won his opening match 13-1 at 149 pounds before being sent to the consolation rounds with a loss by fall. Druck won his first consolation match 4-0 before being eliminated with a 6-3 loss.
Zach Voytek opened his sophomore season with a 7-1 win at 157 pounds. He then lost his next two matches 3-1 and 8-4.
Ryan Walters won his first two matches at 165 pounds, 7-6 and 6-2. Walters dropped his quarterfinal match to runner up Jon Jay Chavez of Finger Lakes WC by fall (6:04). Ryan won his first consolation match 3-2 before being knocked out by pinfall.
Dalton Rosta had a successful first college tournament. He won his first two matches at 184 pounds by scores of 10-3 and 8-2. Dalton was then defeated by Ryan Harman of Navy in the quarterfinals, 2-0. Rosta got a forfeit win in his first consolation match before being eliminated by an 8-2 result. In the upper weights,
Morris Lawson (197),
Alex Soutiere (285) and
Max Gladstone all went 0-2 on the day.
The team will compete at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational next Saturday.
