Box Score Seton Hill hosted California in a PSAC West battle on Saturday at Offutt Field. The Griffins took a early 7-0 lead and trailed just 17-14 midway thru the third quarter but Cal scored twice in the fourth quarter to put the game away and come away with a 31-21 victory.
FJ Williams set a new SHU single game record with 15 receptions.
Drew Jackson also set two new SHU single game records with 41 completions and 77 pass attempts. SHU drops to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in PSAC play.
Both teams exchanged three and outs on their first drives of the game. SHU then got to their own 49 on their next drive but an offensive pass interference call stalled the Griffin drive. Cal started their next drive in SHU territory but a strip sack from
Tanelious Walton that was recovered by
Jamarius Richardson at the SHU 26 gave the Griffins the ball back. SHU then drove 74 yards in 10 plays for their first score of the game.
Drew Jackson hit
Lenny Dowell for a 20 yard TD on a 4th and 5 to give SHU the 7-0 lead with 5:32 to play in the first half. Cal answered right back with a 5 play, 40 yard drive to tie the score at 7 late in the first quarter.
Cal contined its drive from the end of the first quarter in the second quarter and completed it with a 26 yard TD pass to lead 14-7 with 12:07 to play in the second. SHU was driving on their next possession and got to the Cal 42 before another offensive pass interference penalty halted the drive. Neither team was able to get anything going on their next two possessions as they both had two three and outs. Cal then took over at the SHU 46 with 4:30 to play in the second quarter. The Vulcans drove to the SHU 4 yard line but settled for a 21 yard field goal and a 17-7 halftime lead.
Cal got into SHU territory on their first drive of the second half but were forced to punt. After one first down, the Griffins were forced to punt, giving the ball to Cal at their own 47 yard line. On the second play of their possession,
Chase Parker stripped Cal QB James Harris of the ball and
Jamarius Richardson recovered his second fumble of the game, giving SHU great field position at the Cal 45 yard line. SHU was able to take advantage and scored 13 plays later when
Khalil Howard plunged in from one yard out to cut the Cal lead to 17-14 with 5:24 left in the third. On the next Cal possession the Griffin defense again stepped up, stopping Harris on a QB keeper on 4th and inches at the Cal 32 yard line. SHU could not move the ball and turned it over on downs at the Cal 24. SHU forced the Vulcans to punt and Jackson hit
FJ Williams for 46 yards to the Cal 33 on the final play of the third quarter.
The Griffins picked up one first down but the drive stalled and they tried for a 36 yard field goal which was blocked, giving Cal the ball at their own 20. The Vulcans next drive stalled and the Griffins went three and out on their next possession. Cal then went 54 yards on 9 plays, ending on a 1 yard TD run that gave them a 24-14 lead with 5:30 left in the contest. After SHU failed on a fourth down conversion in their own territory, the Vulcans put the game away with a 20 yard TD run. Seton Hill ended the scoring with a 2 yard TD run by Howard with 40 seconds left in the contest.
SHU picked up 25 first downs to 20 for the Vulcans and outgained Cal by a 398-375 margin.
Drew Jackson was 41-77 for 354 yards and 1 touchdown.
FJ Williams had 15 catches for 184 yards.
Larry Joshua and
Brandon Stout each had 7 catches.
Ricardo Housen and
Donato Clemente each finished with 12 tackles.
Chase Parker and
Titus Morris each added 10 tackles. Parker had a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Seton Hill will travel to Indiana next Saturday for a 2 PM kickoff.
