Playoff Run Ends with 3-0 Loss to Wheeling Jesuit in WVIAC Title Match

Box Score Seton Hill battled defending WVIAC champion Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday afternoon in the Eddie King Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Charleston.  It is the first ever WVIAC final appearance for the Griffins.  The #18 ranked Cardinals were too much for the Griffins as they defeated the Griffins 3-0.  Seton Hill falls to 22-12 overall.  Corrine Gahagen, Lauren Teed and Shelby Kyllo each were named to the WVIAC All Tournament Team.    
 
Corrine Gahagen got the Griffins on the board with a kill to cut the Wheeling Jesuit lead to 2-1.  WJU then ran off the next six points to take an 8-1 lead and force a SHU timeout.  SHU responded with two points to cut the lead to 8-3.  Wheeling then scored the three points but Shelby Kyllo ended that run with a solo block to cut the lead to 11-4.  Kyllo followed with a kill and SHU trailed by six.  Wheeling then extended its lead to eight at 14-6.  Gahagen picked up her second kill of the set to cut the lead to 15-8.  WJU scored two in a row and the Griffins used their final timeout of the set at 17-8.  Gahagen tried to keep the Griffins in the set with another kill to make it 18-9.  Abigail Malsch's kill got the lead back to nine 19-10.  WJU got a block to extend the lead to 22-11.  Malsch from the back row cut the lead to ten at 22-12.  Katie Bloomgren followed with an ace and SHU trailed 22-13.  Gahagen kept the set alive with a kill that made it 24-15.  Wheeling closed out the set at 25-15. 
 
Kelsey Profio tied the second set up at one with a kill.  Gahagen's solo block tied the set at two.  WJU took a 6-3 lead following a SHU service error.  WJU then ran off three more points and SHU took their first timeout at 9-3.  Gahagen got a solo block out of the timeout to make it 9-4.  Chelsey Regovich got a kill out of the back row and SHU trailed 10-5.  Malsch followed with an ace.  Kyllo and Larissa Santangelo followed with a block and SHU trailed 10-7.  Regovich got another kill to make the score 12-8.  Regovich got another one and SHU trailed 13-9.  WJU then scored four straight and SHU took their last timeout of the set.  The WJU run continued and they took the second set 25-13.   
 
Christina Donahoe tied the third set at one with a kill.  Gahagen and Santangelo teamed for a block to the score at two.  Donahoe gave the Griffins their first lead of the match at 4-3 with a kill.  Wheeling was able to take an 8-6 lead.  The WJU run continued and SHU took their first timeout at 11-6.  Gahagen came out of the timeout with a kill and SHU trailed by four.  Regovich followed with an ace.  Malsch's kill cut the WJU lead to 13-10 and Wheeling took their first timeout.  Malsch picked up another kill to trim the lead to three at 14-11.  Kyllo and Gahagen had back to back kills and WJU led 17-14.  WJU then ran off two points and SHU trailed 19-14 and SHU took their final timeout.  The Griffins ran off four straight points to cut the lead to 21-18.  Wheeling then closed out the set to take the title with a 25-18 victory. 
 
Corrine Gahagen led the Griffins with 6 kills.  Abigail Malsch added 5.  Kelsey Profio had 12 assists and Malsch had 13 digs.  Gahagen led with 6 blocks.
