Seton Hill University volleyball Coach
Rick Hall has announced his retirement following the 2025 volleyball season.
Coach Hall completed his 41st season with the Griffins in 2025. Over his 41 seasons, the Griffins have had an 822-453 overall record. Coach Hall won his 700th match in 2017 when the Griffins defeated California (PA). Last season, the Griffins won Coach Hall's 800th match with a victory over Slippery Rock.
"Thank you all for an unforgettable career as the volleyball coach here at SHU," said coach Hall.
"After 41 years, countless practices, bus rides, whistles, timeouts, and "one more rep!" speeches, I've decided it's finally time to retire. From playing volleyball matches in Sullivan (the only gym), having only 3 total sports... To 22 sports and some of the best facilities around. I've had the privilege of coaching incredible athletes, surviving more five-set thrillers than any cardiologist would approve of, and somehow keeping my clipboard mostly intact through all of it."
Hall added, "To my Players, Alumni, fellow coaches and most importantly my family. Thank you for the laughs, the memories, and for politely pretending to understand whatever play I tried to draw up during timeouts. It's been a wonderful ride, and I'm grateful for every moment—even the ones responsible for a few extra gray hairs. Thank heavens for my wonderful, beautiful wife and her unwavering support over the years. And the best assistant coach—and brother—a guy could ask for: Bob"
During his early years at Seton Hill Coach Hall won two Northeast Regional Coach of the Year honors, four District Championships, two Regional Championships, and four national tournament appearances in Hawaii, Kansas, and California.
In 2006, Coach Hall was inducted into the first class of the Seton Hill University Athletic Hall of Fame.
After joining the NCAA, the Griffins made thirteen conference tournament appearances (5 WVIAC and 8 PSAC). The Griffins played in three conference finals, winning the PSAC Championship in 2018. Coach Hall's teams also made the NCAA Tournament five times including a NCAA Atlantic Regional Final appearance in 2018. Since joining the PSAC in 2013, Hall has coached 19 All PSAC award winners including two PSAC West Defensive Athletes of the Year, one PSAC West Athlete of the Year and one PSAC West Freshman of the Year. The Griffins have had 11 All Region selections and six All Americans over the past twelve seasons.
Coach Hall's influence on volleyball in the area has extended beyond Seton Hill. He enjoyed a brief coaching stint with Hempfield high school and has been involved in various USVBA Juniors Programs, as well as the development of volleyball in the Catholic Youth Organization in Greensburg for grades 4 through 8. Coach Hall has also been a college and high school official for the past 20 years.
A Latrobe High School and St. Vincent College graduate, Hall played professionally in the Association of Volleyball professionals in the late seventies and early eighties. His stints on the Cuervo Gold Pro Beach Doubles Tour, along with the Miller Lite Pro Beach Doubles Tour allowed him to play against the best professional competition up and down the east coast. Hall's indoor experience came with the United States Volleyball Association.
