Box Score The Griffin volleyball team headed west on Route 70 to battle the # 14 ranked Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday evening. Seton Hill battled but fell by a 3-0 score. SHU falls to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in WVIAC play.
Seton Hill used an 8-0 run late in the first set to tie the set at 23 but Wheeling Jesuit prevailed by the score of 25-23. Wheeling pulled away late in set two for a 25-20 win. Wheeling put the match away with a 25-16 win in the third set.
The early part of the first set was tight with neither team holding more than a two point advantage. Wheeling changed that when they took an 11-7 lead following a 4-1 run. A WJU ace and SHU service error increased the WJU lead to 15-9. A SHU hitting error at 18-11 forced a SHU timeout. A
Corrine Gahagen kill cut the lead to 20-13.
Abigail Malsch's solo block cut the WJU lead to 21-15.
Shelby Kyllo picked up a kill and cut the lead to 5 at 23-18. Another Malsch kill and the Griffins trailed by only 3 at 23-20. A Gahagen ace followed and the Griffins trailed by two. Kyllo and
Larissa Santangelo followed with a block and WJU took their first timeout with a one point lead at 23-22. A Malsch/Kyllo block made the run 8-0 and tied the match at 23. Wheeling was able to close out the match with a 2-0 run and take the set 25-23.
The early part of the second set was very tight as well as neither team led by more than one point until Wheeling took an 11-9 lead following a block. Wheeling extended the lead to 12-9 but after a Malsch ace the score was tied at 12.
Christina Donahoe and Kyllo teamed for a block to give SHU a 13-12 lead. WJU then ran off a 4-1 run and caused coach
Rick Hall to call a timeout. Malsch got a kill from the back row to cut the lead to 19-15. Gahagen followed with a kill and SHU trailed 19-16. WJU ran off two in a row and SHU called their second timeout. Two Griffin kills from Donahoe and Malsch brought the lead back to 21-18. A Gahagen kill eliminated one WJU set point. A WJU hitting error made it 24-20. Wheeling was able to put the set away at 25-20.
Donahoe started off the third set with a kill. Gahagen picked up her second kill of the set to give SHU a 5-4 lead. Two WJU ball handling errors increased the SHU lead to 7-5. Wheeling responded with a 4-0 run and SHU took their first timeout. Kyllo got a kill to cut the WJU lead to 11-9. WJU scored 4 in a row to make it 15-9. Wheeling led 18-10 and SHU called their second timeout. Wheeling was able to put the set away and close out the match with a 25-16 third set victory.
Abigail Malsch led the Griffins with 8 kills.
Corrine Gahagen and
Christina Donahoe added 7.
Courtney Field had 19 assists and
Lauren Teed led with 19 digs. Malsch added 11 digs.
Seton Hill will return to action on next Wednesday when they battle Pitt Johnstown. The match will be broadcast by the Westmoreland Sports Network.
