Seton Hill won its seventh straight WVIAC Contest with a 3-1 road win at Fairmont State on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Griffins sit alone in third place in the WVIAC by themselves. SHU improves to 16-11 overall and 9-2 in WVIAC play. Fairmont State took the first set, 25-22 and the Griffins tied the match at one with a 25-21 win in the second set. SHU won 25-22 in the third and closed out the match with a 25-18 victory in set four.
Back to back blocks gave the Griffins an early 6-4 lead in the first set. SHU extended its lead to 11-8 and after a
Shelby Kyllo kill and two FSU hitting errors, the Griffins led 14-9. Fairmont battled back and scored 7 of the next 9 points to tie the set at 16.
Corrine Gahagen got a kill to put SHU up 17-16. After an
Abigail Malsch kill the set was tied at 18 but FSU was able to use a 7-4 run to close out the first set.
Gahagen took control of the second set with three kills and a block to give SHU a 5-3 lead.
Kelsey Profio followed with an ace to extend the lead to 6-3. FSU tied the match at 7 before
Larissa Santangelo gave SHU a 9-7 lead with a kill.
Chelsey Regovich's kill tied the second set at 12. A
Katie Bloomgren ace forced a FSU timeout at 15-12. Kyllo and Gahagen each picked up a kill and
Lauren Teed added an ace as the Griffins extended their lead to 20-14. FSU came back to cut the lead to 21-19. Gahagen followed with a kill and Gahagen teamed with Santangelo for a block to push the lead to 23-19. Profio's second ace of the set gave the Griffins their first set point and Gahagen closed out the set with a kill.
Malsch came to life in the third set and led the Griffins to an early 9-4 lead with two blocks and a kill. FSU went on a 5-0 run that tied the set at 9. Teed picked up a kill to give SHU a 10-9 lead. A Gahagen block and Profio kill keyed a 5-0 Griffins run that game them a 16-11 lead. Malsch added two kills and a block and SHU led 21-14. FSU cut the lead to 22-17 and SHU took a timeout. The Griffins used two FSU hitting errors to close out the third set.
Malsch had two kills early in the fourth set and SHU took a 6-4 lead. FSU battled back to tie it a seven. Teed's third ace of the contest gave the Griffins a 10-8 lead. FSU scored three straight for an 11-10 lead. Gahagen and Malsch teamed up as the Griffins went on a 5-0 run to lead 15-11. Each had a kill and they teamed for a block. A red card on the FSU bench gave the Griffins a point and extend the lead to 16-11. Santangelo had a block and Kyllo a kill to push the lead to 6 at 19-13. Malsch then had a kill followed by an ace to give SHU a 22-15 lead. Kyllo's block extended the lead to 23-17 and Teed closed out the match with her fourth ace of the contest.
Corrine Gahagen powered home 16 kills without an error to hit .500 in the victory. Shelby Kyllo chipped in eight kills while Abigail Malsch added seven. Kelsey Profio distributed 27 assists for the Griffins. Lauren Teed had a team-high 18 digs, but also sliced the FSU serve receive with four aces. Malsch registered nine digs to go along with six blocks. Kyllo registered nine block assists while Gahagen tallied seven. Larissa Santangelo totaled six blocks.
