Seton Hill made the short trip to California, PA for an important PSAC West and Atlantic Regional contest on Wednesday evening. The Griffins could not recover from a slow start and were defeated by the #24 Vulcans by the score of 68-54. SHU is now 19-8 overall and 14-7 in PSAC play.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Griffins learned they remained eighth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings. The top eight teams make the NCAA regional.
The Griffins got off to a slow start thanks to poor ball handling and trailed 10-4 at the 4:18 mark of the first quarter.
Alexandra Hay had all four Griffin points. The team had 7 turnovers in the first six minutes. Cal was able to extend their lead to 20-8 at the end of the quarter. Both teams combined for 19 turnovers and the Griffins were just 3-10 from the floor.
Two baskets from
Katie Nolan and a three pointer from Trest trimmed the Vulcans lead to 26-15 with 6:50 to play in the quarter. Back to back three pointers from Hay and
Jenna Kaufman cut the Vulcans lead to 34-25 with 2:22 to play in the quarter, forcing a Vulcan timeout. Hay hit another three pointer with 15 seconds to play in the half to cut the Cal lead to 37-28 at the half.
The Vulcans went on a 6-2 run to start the second half forcing a Griffin timeout just over two minutes into the half. A three pointer from
Lindsey Mifsud trimmed the lead back to ten at 45-35 with just over five minutes to play in the quarter. A basket from Hay cut the lead to 49-42 with 2:45 to play but the Vulcans scored the final six points of the quarter for a 55-42 lead after three quarters.
Cal scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to push their lead to seventeen points. SHU got to back within twelve on another three from Hay 6:15 to play in the game. A Trest basket cut the lead to 64-53 with just under four minutes to play.
Alexandra Hay led the Griffins with 15 points.
Cheyenne Trest added 13 points.
Jenna Kaufman finished with 9 points.
Katie Nolan added 8 points off the bench.
With the loss, the Griffins clinch the fourth seed in the PSAC West and will host Gannon on Monday evening at 6 PM in the first round of the PSAC Tournament.
SHU will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Indiana (PA) on Senior Day. Tip is set for 1 PM.
