Seton Hill hosted #9 IUP on Senior Day on Saturday as they honored seniors
Jenna Kaufman,
Alexandra Hay,
Lindsey Mifsud and
Halie Torris before the game. The Crimson Hawks used a thirty point third quarter in route to an 86-71 victory over the Griffins. SHU drops to 19-9 overall and 14-8 in PSAC play while the Crimson Hawks improve to 25-2 overall and 20-2 in PSAC play.
The Griffins came out of the gates slow against the Crimson Hawks and trailed 18-4 just under seven minutes into the contest. After trailing 20-6, the Griffins got back to back three pointers from Mifsud and Kaufman to cut the lead to 20-12 with 1:41 left in the quarter. SHU trailed 22-14 after one quarter of action.
After the Griffins cut the lead to 24-20 with 5:20 to play in the second quarter on two free throws, IUP answered with six straight points to build their lead to 30-20 with 4:03 left in the half. Two free throws from Hay and a steal and layup from Hay combined with two
Katie Nolan free throws cut the IUP lead to 30-26 with 3:07 left in the half. A jumper from Kaufman and two more from Hay trimmed the IUP lead to just 35-32 at the halftime break.
A three point play from Kaufman gave the Griffins their first lead of the game at 37-36 with 8:36 left in the third quarter. Two free throws from Laslo and a jumper from Kaufman pushed the lead to 41-38 with just over seven minutes left in the quarter. Two free throws from
Cheyenne Trest gave SHU its final lead of the contest at 43-40 with 5:48 left in the quarter. IUP then hit five three pointers over the next four minutes to build their lead to ten points at 61-51 with 1:40 to play in the third quarter. IUP took that ten point lead into the fourth quarter as they led 65-55.
Seton Hill got to within six points after two free throws from Kaufman and a basket from Nolan just over a minute into the fourth quarter. That would be as close as the Griffins would get as the Crimson Hawks put the game away from the free throw line.
The difference in the game was three point shooting. IUP finished 12-29 while the Griffins shot just 2-22 from the free throw line.
Kaufman paced the Griffins with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Hay finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Nolan also added 14 points off the bench for the Griffins.
SHU will return to action on Monday evening at 6 PM when they host Gannon in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. The teams split this season's matchups with SHU winning by two at Gannon and then the Knights knocked off the Griffins by two in Greensburg later in the season.
