Seton Hill held off Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon in PSAC play and with the win, clinched their fifth straight PSAC Tournament appearance. The Griffins defeated the Lakers by the score of 65-59 in front of 210 fans at the McKenna Center. SHU is now 18-7 on the season and 13-6 in PSAC play.
The first quarter was very tightly played with neither team holding more than a three point lead in the quarter. The game was tied three times throughout the quarter. SHU took two three point leads late in the quarter on a three pointer from
Alexandra Hay and one on a basket from
Jenna Kaufman. The Griffins held a 17-16 lead after the first quarter.
The Griffins opened the second quarter scoring the first six points, three on a three pointer from Hay and the other three on an old fashioned three point play from
Katie Nolan. After a jumper from the Lakers, SHU went on a 12-3 run to take a 35-21 lead midway thru the second quarter. Another basket from Kaufman gave SHU a 14 point lead, 37-23 with 3:45 to play in the half. Mercyhurst closed the half on an 8-1 run to trim the lead to 38-31 at the halftime break.
Two free throws from
Cheyenne Trest and another basket from Kaufman extended the lead to nine with 8:05 to play in the quarter. Over the next seven minutes, the Lakers outscored the Griffins 15-6 to tie the score at 48 with just over a minute remaining. Two layups from Nolan gave SHU a 52-48 lead after three quarters.
Mercyhurst scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a 54-52 lead. Back to back buckets from Kaufman and Hay gave SHU a 56-64 lead with just under five minutes left in the game. After the Lakers tied the score, SHU scored six straight to take a 62-56 lead with 2:01 left in the game. SHU got a free throw from Nolan and two from Kaufman to push the lead back to 65-59 with under a minute to go. After a defensive stop the Lakers let the Griffins run thirty seconds off the clock without fouling, essentially ended the game.
Kaufman led the Griffins with a game high 22 points. Hay also reached double figures with 16.
Katie Nolan scored ten points off the bench for the Griffins.
SHU will head to Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday evening for a 5:30 PM start.
