Seton Hill made the short trip to Johnstown, PA to take on Pitt Johnstown in PSAC West action on Wednesday evening. The Griffins jumped out to an early lead only to trail at the half but rallied with a huge fourth quarter for a 66-59 road win. SHU is now 19-7 on the season and 14-6 in PSAC play.
Earlier in the day the Griffins found out they were ranked eighth in the first NCAA Regional rankings of the season. The top eight teams make the regional.
The Griffins jumped out to a 14-6 lead at the first media timeout over the Mountain Cats.
Alexandra Hay led the Griffins with 7 points during the run. SHU was able to extend their lead to 20-8 on a jumper from
Lindsey Mifsud with 15 seconds to play but a UPJ shot at the buzzer cut the lead to 20-10.
The Mountain Cats opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 21-20 lead less than three minutes into the quarter. A basket from Hay and two free throws from Trest pushed the lead to 24-21 with 6:13 to play in the half. The Griffins went the next four minutes without a basket before Trest hit a jumper with 2:10 to play that tied the score at 26. UPJ scored four of the final six points to take a 30-28 lead into the halftime break.
It was all Trest in the third quarter for the Griffins as she scored all eight points in the first five minutes of the quarter. SHU trailed 39-36 at the under five media timeout. Hay scored the final seven points of the quarter, including a layin at the buzzer to cut the UPJ lead to 47-46 at the end of the quarter.
Another three pointer from Hay and a layin from
Courtney Cecere gave SHU a 51-49 lead early in the quarter. A three pointer from from Trest extended the Griffins lead to 55-51 with 5:45 to go in the game. After UPJ tied the score at 55,
Katie Nolan made back to back layups to give SHU a 59-55 lead with 2:10 to play.
UPJ scored to trim the lead to 59-57 before Trest hit a dagger three pointer to push the lead back to five at 62-57 with 1:15 left. A steal and layin from Hay put the game away for the Griffins.
Trest led the Griffins with a game high 24 points. Hay added 21 points.
SHU will be off for a week before traveling to California (PA) next Wednesday evening.
