Seton Hill returned from its Christmas Break and opened PSAC West play against Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins received career highs from
Cheyenne Trest and
Alexandra Hay as they knocked off Slippery Rock by the score of 85-78. Its the sixth straight win for the Griffins as they improve to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in PSAC play.
Trest scored 35 points in the win and Hay finished with 26. Trest's 35 points are the third most scored by a Griffin in NCAA play.
Slippery Rock led throughout the entire first quarter with the Griffins only being able to tie the game four times during the quarter. The Rock led by as many as five points and took a 19-17 lead into the second quarter. Trest scored 8 points in the quarter and Hay finished with 7.
Hay's three pointer to open the second quarter gave the Griffins their first lead of the game at 20-19. An old fashioned three point play from Trest pushed the Griffins lead to 32-28 with 4:23 to play in the half. A layin from
Katie Nolan and a basket from Hay gave SHU a 36-34 lead at the halftime break.
The third quarter was all Trest for the Griffins as she scored the team's first fifteen points.
Jenna Kaufman's three pointer with 2:21 to play in the quarter was the first point not scored by Trest. The Griffins could not pull away from the Rock in the quarter and Hay's three pointer in the last minute tied the score at 59 heading to the fourth quarter. Cheyenne finished the quarter with 17 points.
Halie Torris hit a jumper to open the scoring in the fourth quarter. The game would turn for the Griffins at the 8:36 mark of the quarter when the Rock picked up a personal foul then two technicals which resulted in five made free throws from Trest that extended the Griffins lead to 66-59. A layup from Kaufman and two free throws from Hay and
Courtney Cecere pushed the Griffins lead to 74-62 with 6:13 to play. Over the next five minutes, the Rock was able to cut the lead to five at 78-73 with 1:38 to play. The Griffins were able to put the game away at the free throw line, hitting seven of eight, to close out the 85-78 win.
Trest scored her career high 35 points on 9-14 shooting from the floor, 2 of 4 from three and 15-19 from the free throw line. She also added 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 rebounds and a block. Hay scored her career high 26 points on 7-12 from the field, 5 of 6 from three point land and 7-10 at the line. Kaufman finished with 8 points. Nolan added 6 points and Cecere finished with 10 rebounds.
SHU will continue PSAC West play on Wednesday when they travel to Edinboro.
