The Seton Hill women's basketball team is heading into the Christmas holiday on a roll, the winners of five straight contests. The Griffins won their fifth straight on Monday afternoon with a 94-41 victory over Salem International in the final game of the Salem Christmas Classic. The win moves the Griffins to 8-3 on the season.
After giving up the first basket of the game, the Griffins scored the next seven points and never looked back in cruising to a win.
Cheyenne Trest got the Griffins on the board with a three pointer. Back to back three pointers from Trest and
Alexandra Hay pushed the Griffins lead to 13-4 midway thru the quarter. Salem trimmed the Griffins lead to two points before baskets from
Jenna Kaufman and
Courtney Cecere extended the Griffins lead to 19-13 after one quarter of action.
Salem again scored the first basket of the second quarter but the Griffins responded and were able to take a 30-17 lead on a three pointer from
Lindsey Mifsud midway thru the second quarter. Another set of back to back threes from Trest and Hay pushed the Griffins lead to 38-23 with 2:41 left in the half. SHU took a 41-28 lead into the halftime break.
The second half was all Seton Hill as they outscored the Tigers by a 53-13 margin to pull away in the game.
Over the first 3:38 of the third quarter, the Griffins went on a 14-0 run to build their lead to 55-28. The Griffins got baskets from five different players during the run. Seven straight points from
Halie Torris extended the Griffins lead to 62-35 with 3:37 to play in the quarter. The Griffins carried a 68-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
Trest hit back to back three pointers to open the fourth quarter. A three pointer from Torris gave SHU its biggest lead of the game at 55 points, 94-39 in the last minute of play.
The Griffins finished the game shooting 47% from the floor including 51% in the second half.
Trest led four Griffins in double figures with 18 points. She also added 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Torris scored 17 points in just 19 minutes of play while adding 6 rebounds. Hay finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block and steal. Kaufman just missed a double double with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
SHU will be off for the Christmas holiday and return to action on Saturday, December 30th when they open PSAC West play against Slippery Rock at 1 PM.
