Griffins Win Home Opener

The Griffin women opened their 2016-17 home slate with a non conference matchup against old WVIAC foe Alderson Broaddus on Sunday afternoon.  SHU struggled out of the gates early but recovered and took control of the contest late in the third quarter for a 76-67 victory.  SHU improves to 4-1 on the season.

Alderson Broaddus came out of the gates firing as they scored the first eight points of the game to take a quick 8-0 lead three minutes into the contest.  SHU responded with eight straight of their own to tie the score at 8 with 5:35 left in the first quarter.  Jenna Kaufman and Sydney Rabold each hit threes during the run.  AB then answered right back with six straight points to take a 14-8 lead.  Alexandria Deep hit one of two free throws and SHU trailed 14-9 after one quarter of action. 

The Battlers hit two more three pointers to take a 20-16 lead with 8:10 to play in the half.  SHU then drained three straight three pointers, one each by Halie Torris, Lindsey Mifsud and Rabold to take their first lead of the game at 27-23 midway thru the second quarter.  The lead with switch back a few more times before the half but SHU ended up taking a 33-32 lead into the halftime break. 

Mariah Wells opened up the scoring in the second half by hitting a three pointer.  A three from Kaufman extended the SHU lead to 44-40 with 6:24 to play in the third quarter.  AB then used a 7-0 run to retake a 47-44 lead with 4:42 to play.  Back to back layups from Chrisanna Green and Deep put SHU ahead for good at 48-47 with three and a half minutes left in the quarter.  Torris then connected on a three pointer to give the Griffins their largest lead of the game at that point, six, 55-49 with just over a minute remaining.  SHU took a 57-53 lead into the fourth quarter. 

Torris drained a three to answer a Battler bucket in the first three minutes of the final quarter.  Back to back layups from Kaufman and Deep pushed the Griffins lead to 64-57 with 3:42 to play in the game.  AB got to within four at 66-62 with 2:55 to play but SHU answered with six straight including another three from Torris to take a 72-62 lead with less than a minute to play.  SHU hit four of six free throws down the stretch to put the game away. 

Neither team shot the ball well from the floor with the Griffins hitting 40% of their shots to 38% for AB.  The Griffins outrebounded AB by a 49-37 margin. 

Halie Torris led the Griffins with a team high 16 points.  Jenna Kaufman posted a double double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Chrisanna Green just missed a double double with 8 points and a game high 13 rebounds.  Sydney Rabold posted 10 points in her first career start.  Alexandria Deep finished the game with 9 points. 

SHU continues non conference home action on Wednesday when they host Ursuline at 5:30 PM.
