Baseball Season Ends with Heartbreaking 13 Inning Loss in NCAA Regional

Box Score

Seton Hill saw its season end in heartbreaking fashion in the bottom of the 13th inning on a walkoff three run homer.  Millersville eliminated the Griffins by a 6-3 score and ended the Griffins season at the NCAA Atlantic Regional in Erie, PA.  SHU ends the season with a 43-13 record.

The Griffins hit everything right on the button in the top of the first but could not cross the plate.  Garret Vrbanic hit one that the Marauder left fielder made a nice play just in front of the left field wall.  Pat McCarthy was hit by a pitch.  Nick Sell executed a perfect hit and run with a liner into center that allowed McCarthy to reach third.  Chris Miller then lined into a double play to the shortstop to end the inning.  Jordan Fuller hit the leadoff hitter but responded by striking out the side in the bottom of the first.  Millersville started the third inning with 3 straight hits and scored once to take a 1-0 lead after three innings.

Seton Hill tied the score at one after two outs in the top of the fourth.  Miller reached on an error to open the rally.  Cody Herald walked and Anthony Fanelli singled thru the middle to score Miller and tie the score at one.  SHU took the lead in the fifth.  After two outs Vrbanic was hit by a pitch.  He stole second and scored when McCarthy blooped a base hit into right center field that gave SHU a 2-1 lead.  The Marauders retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth.  They had runners on first and third with no outs but Fuller got a strikeout for the first out.  He then got a ground ball that should have been two but the Griffins could not turn it and the Marauders tied the score at 2 on the play.  A double followed and gave the Marauders a 3-2 lead.

SHU tied the score at three in the top of the seventh.  Matt Malacane drew a leadoff walk.  He moved to second on a sac bunt from Zac Heide.  After a strikout he scored when Malacane scored after a Vrbanic single.  Malacane scored on an overthrow to the catcher.   Neither team was able to score and both teams made spectacular defensive plays as the game moved into the 12th inning.  SHU got the first two runners on base in the 12th but could not move anyone past second with a pop out and a double play ending the inning.

Millersville won the game in the bottom of the 13th in walkoff fashion.  A leadoff single and an error put runners on first and second with no one out.  Dan Stoltzfus ended the Griffins season with a walkoff homer to right field on the first pitch of his at bat.
