Griffins Earn Split on the Road at Gannon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Seton Hill returned to PSAC West action on Friday afternoon at GU Field when they took on the Gannon University Knights.  Gannon knocked off the Griffins by the score of 7-2 in game one.  SHU responded with a 6-3 win in game two to earn the split.  SHU is now 33-7 overall and 18-4 in PSAC West play.

Gannon jumped on Griffin starter Mike Bittel for 4 runs in the first two innings.  Bittel's second pitch of the ball game was sent over the left field wall for a home run and a 1-0 lead.  Gannon added 3 more runs in the second.  The Knights opened the inning with a single and a double.  Their next hitter hit the second pitch he saw out to right field for a three run homer and a 4-0 Knights lead after two innings.  Zac Heide doubled to lead off the third inning and moved to third on a groundout but was stranded there after another groundout and a strikeout.

Gannon increased their lead to 5-0 in the third.  They used a one out double and a SHU throwing error after two outs to score their run.  The Knights added two more runs in the fifth on a two run homer to increase their lead to 7-0.  SHU threatened in the sixth.  Pat McCarthy led off the inning with a double and a walk to Nick Sell and hit batter by Chris Miller loaded the bases with one out.  Logan Urtz flew into a double play to end the threat with McCarthy being gunned down at the plate to end the inning.

Seton Hill scored three runs in the top of the second inning of game two.  Chris Miller was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  After he stole second, Logan Urtz walked.  Adam Ferita followed with a three run homer to left center field to give SHU a 3-0 lead.  Cody Herald and Miller both hit solo homers in the top of the third to increase the Griffins lead to 5-0.  The Knights trimmed the lead to 5-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  SHU added an insurance run in the seventh.  After an out, Pat McCarthy singled.  Nick Sell then singled with two outs to put runners on first and second.  McCarthy scored when the Griffins executed a double steal with a throwing error on the catcher.  Perry DellaValle relieved starter Brett Sullivan in the seventh and had two runners on but got a strikeout to end the game and earn the save.

Brett Sullivan improved to 6-0 on the season.  He went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out five.  Perry DellaValle earned his fourth save of the year with a scoreless seventh.  He struck out two.  Pat McCarthy, Nick Sell and Logan Urtz each had two hits.

Seton Hill will host Gannon on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 PM to close out their four game PSAC West set.  It will be senior day and the Griffin Vs Cancer event.
