Nicole Malara became the first Seton Hill University competitor to win the Mondschein Multi on Friday. She turned in career-best marks in nearly every category to make her mark on Kutztown's annual outdoor multi meet. Nicole broke a four year old Seton Hill record that was previously held by Erin Beattie. Her total of 4497 points is a NCAA Provisional qualifying mark and is currently 15th in Division II.
Malara was one of four Griffins to compete. In the women's decathlon,
Angela McCowin was ninth and in the men's decathlon,
Algeron Johnson finished second and
Derek DiAngelis was ninth.
Malara finished with a personal best in six of the seven events. She was first in the 800m run (2:30.93) and second in the shot put (10.98m - 36'-0.25"). Nicole was third in the high jump (1.62m - 5'-3.75") and javelin (29.46m - 96'-8"). Malara was fourth in the 200m dash (27.23) and fifth in the 100m hurdles (15.99). All six of those finishes were personal bests. Nicole was also fifth in the long jump (5.11m).
Angela McCowin finished 9th with 3767 points. She had a personal best in the 200m dash (27.55) and javelin (21.04m). She was third in the 100m hurdles (15.60). On the men's side, Johnson finished 101 points behind the winner Tyler Matunis of Kutztown with 5752 points. Johnson won the high jump (1.87m) and had a third place finish in the shot put (10.43m). He followed that with fourth place finishes in the discus (28.89m) and pole vault. Algeron was fifth in the 110m hurdles and sixth in the long jump and 100m dash. DiAngelis finished with 5018 points. He had sixth place finishes in the discus (27.12m), pole vault and javelin (36.28m). Derek was seventh in the shot put (9.74m).
The track teams will compete in the Bucknell University Meet this weekend.
