Box Score 2 The Griffins continued their spring trip in Clearwater, FL with a doubleheader against former WVIAC foe Ohio Valley on Monday afternoon. SHU rolled to a 13-4 win in game one. The Griffins completed the sweep with a 5-4 win when
Taylor Schmidt threw out the game tying run at third base to end the game. SHU improves to 8-3 on the season.
Nick Sell put the Griffins ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning with a two out, solo shot to left center field.
Taylor Schmidt singled in
Adam Ferita in the second inning to increase the lead to 2-0.
Cody Herald singled in
Garret Vrbanic, who singled, to push the lead to 3-0 after two and a half innings. SHU added two more runs in the fifth. Vrbanic was hit by a pitch, advanced to third and scored on a sac fly by Sell. Herald then singled, stole a bag and scored on a double from
Zac Heide.
Chris Miller threw out three runners trying to steal in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ohio Valley cut the lead to 5-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Griffins sent 13 hitters to the plate in the seventh, scoring 8 runs. Ferita hit a three run homer and
Jarrett Peters had a 2 RBI basehit in the inning.
Matt Ober earned the win, going 5 scoreless innings, giving up 3 hits.
Zac Heide and
Cody Herald each had 3 hits.
Garret Vrbanic,
Nick Sell and
Taylor Schmidt each have 2 hits.
Seton Hill got on the scoreboard first in game two scoring two runs in the third inning. SHU took advantage of two OVU errors and
Garret Vrbanic drove in both with a single. The Griffins added 3 runs in the fourth.
Logan Urtz walked to lead off the inning and
Anthony Fanelli singled. After two outs,
Matt Malacane drove in both Urtz and Fanelli.
Pat McCarthy then singled in Malacane. Ohio Valley got a run back in the top of the sixth inning. OVU scored three times in the top of the seventh but
Taylor Schmidt threw out the game tying run at third base to end the game.
Don McWreath earned the win. He went 6 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6.
Tyler Morder retired the final two hitters to earn the save. No Griffin had multiple hits but
Garret Vrbanic and
Matt Malacane each drove in two runs.
SHU will close out their spring trip on Tuesday with contests against Mansfield and Tiffin.
