Box Score 2 The Griffin baseball team played a very important early season regional doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at York HS against Winston Salem State. SHU and the Rams split the doubleheader with Winston Salem taking game one 2-1 and the Griffins taking game two 3-1 to even the series at one game apiece. SHU is now 3-2 on the season.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between the Rams Sam Burton and the Griffins Miek Bittel. Both teams could only muster up five hits in the contest. Winston Salem State got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff double, the Rams scored the run on a throwing error by the Griffins on a steal attempt. WSSU increased their lead to 2-0 in the fifth with a single and an RBI triple. SHU got their run in the eighth inning.
Zac Heide led off with a single and stole second. He scored on an RBI groundout from
Garret Vrbanic.
Mike Bittel suffered the loss, going 6 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits. Vrbanic was the only Griffin with two hits.
SHU scored single runs in the first three innings of game two and used the pitching of
Brett Sullivan for the win.
Anthony Fanelli drew a one out walk and moved to second on a groundout and scored on a RBI single from Heide to give SHU a 1-0 lead. In the second,
Matt Malacane walked, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Vrbanic. SHU increased the lead to 3-0 in the third inning.
Nick Sell doubled with one out and scored on another RBI from Heide. Winston Salem got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Sullivan earned the win, going six innings, giving up 1 run on five hits.
Perry DellaValle pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save of the year. Sell and Heide each had two hits.
The Griffins will complete the three game series on Sunday afternoon in York, SC.
