Box Score 2 Seton Hill hosted California in a key PSAC West doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to open their four game set. The Griffins used three solo homers for a 5-1 win in game one. SHU walked off the Vulcans in game two by the score of 6-5. SHU is now 34-14 overall and 20-6 in PSAC West play.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a little power surge.
Chris Miller led off the inning with a solo shot to left field.
Nick Sell followed that with a solo shot of his own to left field.
Matt Malacane was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a
Taylor Schmidt single to give SHU the 3-0 lead. The Griffins added a run in the third. After back to back singles from Sell and
Brandon Jossey, Malacane doubled in a run to give SHU a 4-0 lead.
Cody Herald increased the lead to 5-0 with another solo homer in the fifth.
Mike Bittel earned his seventh win of the season. He went 6+ innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits while striking out three.
Alex Haines recorded the final three outs to earn the save.
Nick Sell was the lone Griffin with 2 hits.
Jordan Fuller was able to escape a bases loaded no out threat in the top of the third to keep game two scoreless. He got a strikeout and two popouts to end the inning. SHU used the momentum to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.
Garret Vrbanic singled to lead off the inning and scored when
Brendan Costantino homered to left field. California took the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. Back to back doubles from
Chris Miller and
Nick Sell trimmed the lead to 4-3.
Matt Malacane then tied the score at four with an RBI single in the sixth. California took the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. After the first two batters were retired in the seventh,
Anthony Fanelli walked on four pitches.
Ryan Hayden pinch ran and scored when
Cody Herald doubled to tie the score at five. Herald's drive sent the Vulcan left fielder to the wall,he jumped and kept the ball in the yard but could not hang out allowing Hayden to score. Miller was then walked intentionally to set up Sell's game winning heroics. Sell singled thru the left side of the infield, scoring Herald and giving the Griffins the 6-5 walk off win.
Jesse Cooper earned the win in relief.
Nick Sell had two hits in game two.
Seton Hill will travel to Washington, PA to close out the four game set on Sunday.
