Griffins Split Doubleheader with #7 Grand Valley State

The Griffin baseball team opened their spring break trip with a doubleheader against #7 Grand Valley State at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida on Saturday afternoon.  Grand Valley took the first game by a 5-2 score and the Griffins rallied from 5-0 down for a 7-6 victory in the nightcap.  SHU is now 4-4 on the season.

Grand Valley took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game one.  The Lakers used four hits to score three times.  Grand Valley added two more runs in the third on a two run homer.  The Griffins left the bases loaded in their halves of the second and third inning.  SHU got a run back in the top of the sixth.  Brandon Jossey doubled to start the inning.  Chris Miller followed with a single to put runners on first and third.  Cody Herald singled in Jossey to cut the score to 5-1.  The Griffins left two runners on in the sixth as well.  Jossey then singled in Nick Sell in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-2 but that was as close as the Griffins would get.  Alex Haines suffered his first loss of the season, giving up all five runs.  Nick Sell had three hits.  Brandon Jossey and Chris Miller added two hits.

The Lakers jumped on the Griffins for five runs in the top of the first of game two.  Brendan Costantino was hit by a pitch and Taylor Schmidt walked to start the Griffin half of the first.  Cody Herald then singled in Costantino to cut the lead to 5-1.  Herald and Schmidt then executed a double steal to trim the lead to 5-2 after one inning.  SHU cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the second.  Garret Vrbanic walked and scored when Costantino reached on an error.  Schmidt then singled in Costantino to make the score 5-4.  Grand Valley extended the lead to 6-4 in the fifth.  Vrbanic was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead to one.  In the Griffins sixth, Schmidt led off with a single and moved to third on a Nick Sell single.  Josh Forbes then hit into a double play scoring Schmidt to tie the score at six.  Cody Herald then singled and stole second and scored when Anthony Fanelli singled him home with the game winning hit. 

Brett Sullivan got the final two outs of the sixth to earn the win.  Jesse Cooper earned the save with a scoreless seventh.  Cody Herald and Anthony Fanelli each had three hits.  Taylor Schmidt and Matt Malacane each added two hits.

The Griffins will travel to #1 Tampa on Sunday morning for a single nine inning contest.
