Pitching Leads Griffins to Sweep of UPJ

Seton Hill hosted Pitt Johnstown to close out its opening four game PSAC West set with the Mountain Cats. The Griffins rode the arm of Brad Schnelle for a 6-1 victory in game one. SHU completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in game two. SHU improves to 14-9 overall and 3-1 in PSAC West play.

After one out in the second inning, Anthony Fanelli drew a walk. Garret Vrbanic then doubled down the left field line. Chris Miller then doubled in both runners to give SHU a 2-0 lead. Matt Malacane then scored when Taylor Schmidt reached on an error. Cody Herald continued the Griffin inning with a two RBI double to give the Griffins a 5-0 lead. Nick Sell drove in Brendan Costantino with a single in the fifth to give SHU a 6-0 lead. UPJ cut the lead to 6-1 with a solo homer in the seventh.

Brad Schnelle earned the win, going the distance. He gave up one run on four hits and struck out two. Cody Herald had two hits for the Griffins.

SHU scored first in game two as well. Brendan Costantino singled with one out and stole second. He scored on a RBI single from Brandon Jossey to give SHU a 1-0 lead in the first. The Griffins added on in the fifth. Garret Vrbanic and Matt Malacane each singled to put runners on first and third. Taylor Schmidt then executed a squeeze play to score Vrbanic. Costantino then followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. UPJ got a run back in the top of the sixth. Chris Miller drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth with a single to right.

Mike Bittel earned the win in game two. He worked 6 innings and gave up one run on three hits. He also struck out three. Brendan Costantino, Nick Sell and Garret Vrbanic each had two hits.

Seton Hill will travel to Alderson Broaddus on Tuesday.
