SHU Splits Opening PSAC West Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Seton Hill traveled to Johnstown, PA on Friday afternoon to open up PSAC West play against Pitt Johnstown.  The doubleheader marks the first PSAC contests in the programs history.  The Griffin bats went silent in the first game as they managed just two hits in a 3-2 loss.  SHU responded with a 4-1 victory in game two to split the doubleheader.  SHU is now 12-9 overall and 1-1 in PSAC West play.

Pitt Johnstown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning without a hit.  A leadoff walk, a sac bunt and a stolen base plus an error gave the Mountain Cats a 1-0 advantage.  Seton Hill took the lead in the fourth.  After an out Anthony Fanelli got the Griffins first hit of the game with a single to right.  Taylor Schmidt then walked.  Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Nick Sell then doubled in both runs with a double down the right field line.  UPJ retook the lead at 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Alex Haines suffered the loss in game one, going the distance.  Two of the three runs were earned and he gave up 4 hits while striking out 5.  Nick Sell doubled and Anthony Fanelli singled for the only Griffin hits.

The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two when Brandon Jossey homered with one out.  UPJ tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second.  The Griffins retook the lead in the third when Cody Herald hit a solo homer.  Anthony Fanelli was then hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single from Nick Sell.  Fanelli scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Schmidt to give SHU a 3-1 lead.  Chris Miller extended the lead to 4-1 with an RBI single.

Brett Sullivan earned the win for the Griffins.  He went the distance, giving up the 1 run on three hits.  He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Cody Herald, Nick Sell and Matt Malacane each had two hits for the Griffins.

Seton Hill will host Pitt Johnstown on Saturday in another doubleheader to complete the four game set.
