Griffins Defeat UPG 8-2 at McKechnie Field

Seton Hill enjoyed an afternoon at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, FL on Tuesday afternoon as they took on Pitt Greensburg at the spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Seton Hill scored two runs in the top of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and defeated UPG by the score of 8-2.  SHU improves to 7-5 on the season.
 
The Griffins got on the board in the top of the first inning as Brendan Costantino singled to right field on the first pitch of the game.  Costantino then stole second and third base on the next three pitches.  After an out, Nick Sell hit a drive to deep left center field and the sacrifice fly scored Costantino to give SHU the 1-0 lead.  Pitt Greensburg answered right back in the bottom of the first inning with a run on a perfectly executed double steal to tie the score at one.  Pitt Greensburg took a 2-1 lead with another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning.  SHU tied the score at two in the top of the fourth inning.  After two outs, Matt Malacane singled in front of the right fielder.  He moved to second on a balk and then stole third base on the next pitch.  He then scored when Ryan Hayden dropped a single just over the outstretched arm of the shortstop. 
 
Seton Hill took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.  Zac Heide led off the inning with a single.  Anthony Fanelli then drew a walk.  Malacane then put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners up.  Taylor Schmidt then made it 3-2 with a single thru the right side.  Cody Herald then drove in Fanelli with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2.  Cody Herald doubled in the top of the ninth and scored when Jesse Cooper reached on a throwing error.  Brett Sullivan then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.  A wild pitch made the score 7-2 and Heide doubled to the right center field to increase the Griffin lead to 8-2. 
 
Austin Sleek will earn the victory after throwing two scoreless innings.  He struck out three and gave up one hit.  Zac Heide was the lone Griffin with two hits.
 
Seton Hill will be off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday morning when they take on Northwood at Winter Haven, FL.
