On a day when the Griffins honored five of its seniors, Seton Hill roared out to an early lead, using the momentum from the senior day festivites but could not hold the momentum and dropped a 73-69 decision to Slippery Rock. SHU falls to 15-10 overall and 7-8 in PSAC play. The Griffins have clinched a playoff spot but can finish no higher than fifth, meaning they will be hitting the road for the first round next Saturday.
The Griffins came out of the gate flying, taking a 15-5 lead at the 13:29 mark of the first half.
Malachi Leonard keyed the run with four baskets. Slippery Rock was able to cut into the lead and used an 11-4 run to trim the score to 19-16 at the 8:12 mark. A layin from
Max Kenyi and another basket from Leonard pushed the lead back to 23-18 with six and a half minutes to play. The Rock scored 7 of the next 9 points and tied the score at 25 with 4:24 to play in the half.
Noah Davis broke the tie with a three pointer. Leonard followed with a tip in to extend the lead back to 30-25.
Nate Perry closed the half with a tip in basket to give the Griffins a 32-29 lead at the break.
Neither team was able to build their lead above three points in the early part of the second half. The fifth tie of the contest occured at the 14:36 mark with the game tied at 43. Over the next four minutes, the Rock used a 14-5 run to take a 57-48 lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the half. A jumper from
Noah Davis, a dunk from
Malachi Leonard and a layin from
Max Kenyi cut the lead to 57-54. A three point play from Kenyi gave the Griffins a 62-61 with 4:22 to play. After a Rock basket,
Nate Perry drained a three to give SHU a 65-63 lead. A jumper from Leonard gave SHU a 68-67 lead with 2:07 to play but the Rock closed the half on a 6-1 run to take the 73-69 victory.
Malachi Leonard led the Griffins with 25 points.
Max Kenyi finished with 12 and
Kameron Taylor added 10 points.
The Griffins will close out the regular season on Wednesday when they host California (PA).
