Box Score The Griffin women's basketball team put on a show for all of the elementary school students in attendance on Kids Day at Seton Hill. SHU jumped out to a 54-34 halftime lead over WV Tech and cruised in the second half to a 106-65 victory over the Golden Bears. All thirteen Griffins that played in the contest, scored at least two points. With the victory, the Griffins improve to 3-4 on the season.
The 106 points sets a new school record for points scored by a women's basketball team while the Griffins were a member of the NCAA, topping the mark of 101 scored against Shepherd on Nov 23rd of 2010. The all time school record for points scored is 118 vs Pitt Bradford in 1988.
The first twelve minutes of the contest were played very tightly with the Griffins holding a 24-23 lead with 8:34 to play in the first half. The Griffins had built their lead to as many of 5 points during the early part of the contest. Six free throws and a jumper from
Kelly Brennan keyed an 8-0 run that built the Griffins lead to 32-23 with 7:16 remaining in the first half. WV State closed the gap to 37-33 with 3:30 to play before the Griffins went on a 17-1 run to close out the first half and take a 54-34 lead into the halftime break.
Halie Torris started the run with a bucket and
Lindsey Mifsud closed out the run with a three pointer with 10 seconds to play in the half. SHU shot 58% in the first half compared to just 35% for the visiting Golden Bears.
The second half started off how the first half ended with a Griffin three pointer, this one coming from
Kelly Brennan. Brennan hit another three and
Meghan Mastroianni drained one as well as the Griffins were able to extend their lead to 75-42 just five minutes into the second half. The Griffins went on an 11-0 run over a three minute stretch to increase the lead to 92-50 with 8:04 left in the second half. Jessican Slagus added 4 points, 2 steals and 2 blocks during the run. The Griffins reached the 100 point mark for the first time since 2010 when
Halie Torris made a layup with 4:51 to play in the half.
The Griffins finished the contest shooting 59% from the floor, 44% from three point land and 87% from the line while holding WV State to just 32% from the field. Seton Hill held a 51-31 advantage on the boards and assisted on 28 of 39 made field goals. SHU also added 13 steals and 8 blocks.
Seton Hill had five players score in double figures led by
Kelly Brennan who scored 16 points.
Meghan Mastroianni was right behind Brennan with 14 points.
Mariah Wells scored 13 points off the bench while
Alexandra Hay added 12 points, 6 assists and 2 steals.
Cha Cha Williams was the last Griffin in double figures with 10 points. She just missed a double double with 9 rebounds.
Jenna Kaufman just missed double figures with 9 points and 7 rebounds.
Lindsey Mifsud finished with a game high 8 assists and 5 points.
Chelsea Apke had a great solid all around game with 5 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
Jessica Slagus added 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals.
Seton Hill will return to PSAC West action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Pitt Johnstown for a 1 PM tip.
