Box Score The field hockey team opened its 2013 season with a 3-2 overtime loss to Assumption on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins rallied to tie the score with just over 2 minutes remaining in the contest before falling in the sudden death overtime period.
Assumption jumped on the Griffins with two goals in the first half of the contest. The Greyhounds scored in the 6th minute and 15th minute of the first half to take a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break. The Griffins responded with a quick goal in the second half.
Ashley Reid scored a goal just under 3 minutes into the second half. Macdonough Scanlon assisted on the goal. Reid then tied the score off a penalty corner with just over two minutes to play in regulation.
Melayna Currie assisted on the game tying goal. Assumption then scored the game winning goal 12:22 into the first overtime period.
Rebecca Portillo was strong in the net, making 10 saves, including 7 in the overtime period.
The Griffins will host American International on Sunday at noon.
