Seton Hill returned to the Linda K. Epling turf for the second time on Friday as they battled undefeated WV State in an elimination contest for the Griffins. The Griffins gave up two runs in the eighth and had the winning run at second base in the ninth but just came up short in being eliminated from the WVIAC Tournament with 2-1 loss to WV State. The Griffins fall to 39-15 overall.
Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the game's first five innings. Seton Hill was able to put two hits on the scoreboard to 0 for WV State as the Griffins
Bob Carbaugh and State's Jordan Butcher engaged in a pitcher's dual. The pitcher's dual continued into the seventh. In the Griffins sixth,
Pat McCarthy had a one out hit single.
Nick Sell then hit in to a double play on a spectacular play by the State second baseman.
WV State cracked the scoreboard and registered their first hit in the eighth. After an out, the Yellow Jackets singled up the middle. After the second out of the inning, State doubled to the left center field gap and the relay throw was up the line allowing the State runner to score and take a 1-0 lead. Another hit on an 0-2 pitch gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead.
McCarthy led off the ninth with a single and Sell walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a pop out, the runners stole second and third to put runners on second and third with one out.
Jackson Boyd walked to load the bases.
Josh Forbes then grounded out to first to score a run and cut the lead to 2-1.
Cody Herald nearly won the game with a hit down the third base line but it was called foul and Herald then grounded out to third to end the contest.
Bob Carbaugh was the hard luck loser, having a no hitter thru 7 1/3 innings before giving up two runs in the eighth.
Pat McCarthy led the Griffins with 3 hits.
