Dream Ends One Win Short of Cary, NC as Griffins Swept by Shippensburg in Regional Title Contests

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Griffins started the season with the motto of 484.18, the distance from Seton Hill to Cary, NC, the site of the NCAA Division II World Series.  After dropping a doubleheader to Shippensburg on Sunday afternoon, that distance seems like a million miles away.  The Griffins season ends just one win short of the ultimate goal. Shippensburg scored 10 unanswered runs to take a 10-3 victory in game one forcing a winner take all game two.  In game two, the Griffins took a 2-0 lead only to give it right back in the following inning and dropping a 3-2 decision to end the season.  The season ends with a 42-17 record.

The Griffins jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in their first at bat.  Brendan Costantino and Pat McCarthy singled to start the inning.  Nick Sell then doubled in Costantino.  Mike Cima made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field.  Josh Forbes added to the lead with a RBI single, scoring Sell.  Shippensburg tied the score at three in the bottom of the first.  A solo homer gave the Raiders a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third.

Shippensburg added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth with 4 unearned runs to build their lead to 8-3.  The Raiders added two more runs in the seventh and increased their lead to 10-3.

Pat McCarthy led the Griffins with 3 hits in game one.

Shippensburg threatened in the top of the second of game two with runners on first and third with one out but Alex Haines retired the next two hitters by strikeout to end the inning.  The Griffins had their own threat in their half of the second with second and third and one out and failed to score as well.  SHU had a runner at third base with one out and their 3-4 hitters up in the third and failed to score as well.

The Griffins took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.  After an out Brendan Costantino singled.  Nick Sell followed with a single and Mike Cima walked to load the bases.  After another out, Josh Forbes came thru with a key two out two RBI single.  Ship answers with three runs in the top of the sixth as the Griffins gift wrapped the runs with two errors to start the inning.

Seton Hill had runners at first and third with no one out and their 3-4 hitters up in the bottom of the seventh.  Ship forced the Griffins into a double play and a flyout ended the threat as the Griffins again fail to score with a runner at third and less than two outs.

Brendan Costantino, Josh Forbes and Cody Herald each had two hits in game two.  Jordan Fuller was the hard luck loser, giving up all three runs, with just 1 of them being earned.  Alex Haines started and went 5 scoreless innings and Brett Sullivan threw 3 scoreless innings at the end of the contest.
