Rally Comes Up Short as Griffins Fall 16-14

Seton Hill opened up WVIAC Tournament play as they battled the number 4 seed Charleston at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, WV.  The Griffins rallied from being down 15-5 and cut the lead to 16-14 but could not complete the comeback and dropped into the losers bracket with a 16-14 loss.  SHU falls to 37-14 overall. 
 
Charleston took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.  After a leadoff double, the Golden Eagles used three Griffin errors to score four runs.   Seton Hill got two runs back in the bottom of the first.  Brendan Costantino drew a leadoff walk.  Pat McCarthy then singled and both runners advanced on a balk.  Nick Sell then hit a sacrifice fly to score Costantino.  Mike Cima came thru with a two out RBI single to cut the lead to 4-2.   
 
The Griffins took the lead in the second.  Brad Comport led off the inning with a single.  McCarthy walked after two outs and Sell followed with a bomb to left center field over the 375 sign to give the Griffins a 5-4 lead.  UC took the lead in the fourth at 8-5 with four more unearned runs.   Charleston continued to pound Griffin pitching in the fifth as Jordan Fuller came on in relief of starter Brad Schnelle.  Charleston scored 5 runs to increase their lead to 13-5.  UC added two more to push their lead to double digits in the sixth at 15-5.  The Griffins scored 1 run in the sixth.  Comport led off with a single to left.  Pinch hitter Brandon Jossey walked.  After a fielder's choice, McCarthy singled in a run to cut the lead to 9.  Cody Herald came thru with a big two out, two RBI single that trimmed the UC lead to 15-8.  Jackson Boyd then cleared the bases with a double and the Griffins cut the lead to 15-11. 
 
Charleston got one run back in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 16-11.  Herald added another two out RBI in the seventh with a single that cut the lead to 16-12.  Cima then doubled in two and the Griffins trailed by only 2.  The Griffins had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth but couldn't score and still trailed 16-14 heading to the ninth. 
 
Brad Comport led the Griffins with 4 hits.  Cody Herald and Mike Cima each added 3 hits.
 
The Griffins will battle West Liberty at 9:30 tomorrow morning in a loser go home contest.
