The Griffins made the short trip to Johnstown to battle the Mountain Cats in a WVIAC Northern Division matchup on Friday afternoon. Seton Hill entered the doubleheader riding a five game winning streak. That winning streak ended in game one as the Griffins surrendered 19 hits in a 13-7 loss. Seton Hill evened the series with an 8-0 victory in game two behind the pitching of
Alex Haines. SHU improves to 20-6 overall and 13-3 in WVIAC play.
Seton Hill jumped on UPJ starter Derek Younker in the top of the first.
Brendan Costantino led off with a triple and scored on a single by
Pat McCarthy to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Jackson Boyd drove in another run with a single to left to push the lead to 2-0 in the top of the first. SHU made it 3-0 in the second after a sac fly from McCarthy.
UPJ batted around in the bottom of the third inning and scored 5 runs on 4 hits to take a 5-3 lead after three innings. That lead did not last very long as the Griffins tied the score at five in the top of the fourth after a two run homer to left from
Brandon Jossey. UPJ got those two runs right back in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. The Mountain Cats added another run in the fifth to make the score 8-5. After two outs in the sixth,
Brad Comport singled and Jossey tripled to right to cut the lead to 8-6. Costantino reached on an error to score Jossey and cut the lead to 8-7. UPJ hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 9-7. The Mountain Cats added 4 more runs in the inning to make it 13-7.
Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two.
Brendan Costantino led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a groundout from
Nick Sell.
Mike Cima's solo homer to left center gave the Griffins a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
Zac Heide drove in a run with a single off the wall in left in the top of the fourth.
Sell tripled to drive in two in the Griffin fifth to increase the lead to 5-0.
Brandon Jossey hit a sac fly to score Sell and push the lead to 6-0.
Pat McCarthy doubled in Costantino in the sixth to make it 7-0. Heide drove in the eighth run of the game with a sac fly in the seventh.
Alex Haines earned the victory, going the distance. He gave up just 3 hits and struck out 8.
The teams will close out the three game set with a single 9 inning contest on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM.
