The Griffins hit the road to Philippi, WV to battle Alderson Broaddus in a WVIAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon. SHU used the pitching of
Alex Haines and the bat of
Mike Cima for a 2-0 victory in game one. AB battled back and took game two by a 6-2 score. SHU is now 11-4 overall and 5-1 in WVIAC play.
Game one was a pitcher's dual between the Griffins
Alex Haines and AB's Jeff Conley. Each pitcher gave up just two hits thru four innings. The Griffins threatened in the fifth but a flyout ended the threat. AB followed with an opportunity of their own but a botched double steal ended their fifth.
The Griffins finally put a dent in the scoreboard in the sixth.
Brandon Jossey led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by
Brendan Costantino. After a strikeout,
Mike Cima actually put a dent in the scoreboard with a homer off the scoreboard in left center to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.
Alex Haines earned the win, going the distance, striking out 8 and giving up 5 hits.
Brandon Jossey had two hits for the Griffins.
AB took a 3-0 lead in game two with a three run homer in the bottom of the first of game two. AB added a run in the second on 4 hits to increase the lead to 4-0.
Ryan Hayden led off the third with a solo homer to left to make it 4-1. AB added another run in the fifth to make it 5-1. AB tacked another one on in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-1.
Pat McCarthy drove in a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-2.
Mike Cima and
Josh Forbes each had two hits.
