On Thursday afternoon the Griffins hosted the Golden Eagles of Clarion University in a non-conference double-header match up. Seton Hill came out on top in both games winning the first game 6-2 and the second game 15-8. With the victories the Griffins record improves to 10-3 overall. It's the 8
th straight win for the team.
In the bottom of the first
Brendan Costantino led off with a walk. Contantino then stole second and third base.
Mike Cima lined out to the left field bringing in Costantino to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Jackson Boyd led the Griffins second with a walk. Boyd stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Cody Herald flied out scoring Boyd and increasing the Griffin lead to 2-0.
Jeff Simon singled and on a
Ryan Hayden home run increasing their lead to 4-0.
The Golden Eagles finally got on the board in the fourth with a homerun by Derek Danver to make it a 4-1 game. In the bottom of the fouth Seton Hill scored 2 runs off of 0 hits once again increasing the Griffin advantage 6-1. In the fifth Clarion scored 1 run off of 2 hits to cut the lead to 6-2.
Mike Bittel earned the victory, going 5 innings and giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6.
In game Costantino led off and reached on an error. Constantino then moved to second on a steal.
Pat McCarthy singled to left field scoring Costantino and giving the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Nick Sell then hit a homerun to left center field bringing in another 2 runs extending the Seton Hill advantage 3-0.
In the second Clarion scored 1 run off of 1 hit making it a 3-1 game.
Matt Malacane got things started in the SHU second with a homerun.
Jesse Cooper singled to center field and advanced to third base on two wild pitches. Costantino grounded out to second base sending Cooper home. After three innings of play Seton Hill held a 5-1 lead.
The third inning was all Clarion was they scored 3 runs off of 4 hits closing the gap on the Griffins to 5-4. In the fourth the Golden Eagles put a run on the board tying the game at 5-5. Seton Hill responded scoring 3 runs off of four singles from Cooper, McCarthy, Sell, and Boyd to snatch the lead back at 8-5. In the fifth and six innings the Griffins continued the momentum scoring 4 runs off of 6 hits in the fifth and 3 runs off of 4 hits in the sixth taking a commanding 15-5 lead going into the seventh inning.
Logan Urtz earned the victory in relief. He went 2 1/3 innings, giving up just 2 hits.
Jesse Cooper led the Griffins with 4 hits.
Pat McCarthy added 3 hits.
The Griffins travel to Alderson Broaddus College this Friday where they take on the Battlers in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 PM. The final game of the series will be played on either Saturday or Sunday at either team's home field. The decision will be made on Friday.
