The Griffin women's basketball team made the short trip to Johnstown, PA for a key WVIAC matchup with fifth place in the league on the line. Seton Hill was able to come out on top with a 64-55 victory, clinching fifth place in the league. SHU improves to 16-12 overall and 13-9 in WVIAC play.
Seton Hill came out of the gates strong and took a 9-4 lead with 13:01 to play in the half on a
Mallory Sanner layup. UPJ responded with an 8-1 run to take a 12-10 lead with 11:49 to play.
Tiara Stossel tied the game at 12 with 11 minutes to play. UPJ then held the lead to the seven minute mark.
Meghan Mastroianni gave SHU a 20-19 lead and Sanner followed with a three to push the lead to 23-19 with six minutes remaining. After a UPJ basket, the Griffins went on a 6-0 run to push the lead back to 8 at 29-21. Three pointers from
Paige Alviani and Sanner in the last two minutes of the half gave the Griffins a 37-28 halftime lead.
UPJ came out firing in the second half and used a 10-4 run over the first four minutes of the half to trim the lead to 41-38. A three from Alviani ended the run and stretched the lead to 44-38. UPJ scored 6 straight to tie the contest at 44 with 13 minutes to play. SHU answered with a 6-0 run of its own. Stossel hit a three pointer to give the Griffins a 56-48 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the half. UPJ was not able to get any closer than 5 points in the second half and closed out the contest by hitting 6 of 6 free throws.
Paige Alviani led the Griffins with a game high 22 points. She also added 4 assists.
Katie Gattuso recorded her 19th double double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Mallory Sanner was the third Griffin in double figures with 10 points. She also added 7 rebounds, a block and a steal.
Clare Berenato pulled down a game high 13 rebounds.
The Griffins will host #12 seed Concord on Monday evening at 7 PM in the first round of the WVIAC Tournament. With a victory, the Griffins will advance to Charleston and play in the WVIAC quarterfinals at 1 PM on Wednesday.
