Huge Second Half Carries Griffins to Win over #8 Lewis

The Griffins traveled to Lewis in a matchup between two of the top 10 ranked teams in the country as the #4 Griffins took on the #8 Flyers on Saturday afternoon.  

The Griffins pulled away in the second half as they outscored the Flyers 11-3 in the second half in route to a 17-9 victory.  SHU is now 9-1 overall.  Lewis falls to 9-2 overall.  

Lewis scored four of the first five goals of the contest as they built a 4-1 lead over the Griffins in the first quarter.  Braedan Lockyer scored with four seconds left in the quarter as SHU cut the lead to 4-2.  

Carter Green scored five minutes into the second quarter as the Griffins cut the lead to 4-3.  Lewis added the next goal to push their lead to 5-3.  SHU scored the next three goals as they took a 6-5 lead.  Michael Coleman, Lockyer and Riley Grudi scored as SHU led with 2:08 to play.  Lewis tied the score at six with a goal with 46 seconds left in the half.  

The teams exchanged goals to start the third quarter with Riley Grudi scoring the Griffin goal.  Coleman and Green scored 32 seconds apart as the Griffins took a 9-7 lead.  The Flyers scored with 9:20 left to cut the lead to one.  SHU scored the final three goals of the quarter with Connor Zostant, Wade Brunelle and Kaden Granberg scoring SHU goals as the Griffins led 12-8 after three quarters.  

Lockyer scored less than a minute into the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 13-8.  After a Lewis goal, the Griffins scored the final four goals of the contest.  Coleman, Gavin Erickson, Mark Strunk and Nate Herbster scored for SHU.

Lockyer led the Griffins with 3 goals and 2 assists. Coleman added 3 goals and 1 assist.  Grudi, Green and Erickson each added two goals. Will Cody finished with 11 saves.

The Griffins will host Malone in a G-MAC contest next Saturday.
