The Griffin men's lacrosse team looked for their first win in Sparks, MD and the USA Lacrosse Headquarters when they battled #3 Tampa on Saturday afternoon.
Seton Hill battled back from 6-0 down to tie the game at nine but Tampa scored the final five goals of the contest to defeat the Griffins by the score of 14-9. SHU is now 8-4 overall while the Spartans improve to 14-1 overall.
Tampa scored the first six goals of the contest as they build a 6-0 lead over the Griffins.
Kaden Granberg and
Connor Zostant scored goals late in the first period as the Griffins cut the lead to 6-2.
Zostant opened the scoring just under three minutes into the second quarter.
Wade Brunelle scored with 7:17 to play in the half as SHU trimmed the lead to 6-4. Tampa scored at the 5:28 mark of the quarter to push their lead to 7-4. SHU then scored three times in the final three minutes of the second quarter to tie the score at seven.
Nate Herbster scored followed by
Braedan Lockyer and
Peyton Gensler right before the halftime whistle.
Herbster scored a man up goal to tie the game at eight with 6:10 left in the third. Less than a minute later Tampa retook the lead 9-8. Brunelle scored with 4:35 to play to tie the game at nine. The Spartans took a 10-9 lead with 1:27 to play in the third.
Tampa then scored the final four goals in the last seven and a half minutes of the fourth quarter for the win.
Zostant, Brunelle and Herbster each scored twice. Gensler and Lockyer added a goal and an assist.
SHU will travel to Frostburg State on Wednesday afternoon for a non conference matchup.
