Seton Hill and Mercyhurst met for the fifth consecutive time in the Great Midwest Conference Championship game. This year's version took place in Saxon Stadium in Erie, PA.
The Griffins led from start to finish as they won their third Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship with a 14-10 win over Mercyhurst. Seton Hill also won G-MAC titles in 2017 and 2018. SHU improves to 12-6 on the season while the Lakers fall to 11-4.
The Griffins came out of the gate flying as they took a quick 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.
Zack Estabrooks opened the scoring 1:51 into the contest. Less than two minutes later,
Layne Harich increased the lead to 2-0. At the 10:20 mark,
Grady Arnold pushed the Griffins lead to 3-0 forcing a Laker timeout. The Lakers got one back but the Griffins closed the quarter with two goals to lead 5-1 at the end of the first quarter. Estabrooks scored his second at the 7:04 mark and
Thomas Hanulak closed out the quarter scoring with a goal with 28 seconds to play.
Mercyhurst found the net first in the second quarter with a goal about five minutes into the period. Back to back goals from Harich put the Griffins in front 7-2 with 7:05 to play. Mercyhurst then answered with the final three goals of the half to trim the SHU lead to 7-5.
SHU responded right back, scoring the first two goals of the third quarter as they extended their lead to 9-5.
McGarity Harper and
David St Clair scored for SHU. The Lakers made their final push of the game by scoring three goals in less than two minutes to trim the Griffins lead to 9-8. Seton Hill showed their resolve by answering right back with three goals of their own in just over two minutes to build their lead back to four. Estabrooks scored two of the three goals with St Clair adding the final goal. The Lakers closed the scoring in the quarter with the final goal as SHU led 12-9 after three.
The Griffins pushed their lead to 14-9 with two goals from Harper less than a minute apart midway through the fourth quarter. SHU was then able to control possession and run clock, clinching the title.
Estabrooks led the Griffins with four goals. Harich and Harper each added three goals with Harich adding an assist. St Clair scored twice and Hanulak added a goal and an assist.
Kevin Mo was unreal in net, finishing with 18 saves.
The Griffins now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The pairings will be announced on Sunday evening. The Griffins were eighth in this week's rankings with the top six teams making the NCAA Tournament.
